Help needed on hdmi receiver

I've a seagate freeagent HDD player and a sony DAV DZ-120k hometheater system. Seagate has HDMI out, but the sony home theater has only 2 channel in. So I wanted to buy an HDMI receiver which can decode to 5.1
channel audio which can connect to my sony speakers directly.

Please advice a few good receivers.

Do you have SPDIF port on your Sony hometheater .. If you have may be you can use that from Seagate SPDIF to Sony using digital coaxial cable to get 5.1 output.

Given the kind of speakers you have, buy an entry level AVR from Pioneer. Cost would be around 14k.

many of the sony's speakers are 3 ohms with unrealistic power ratings measured at high 10% distortion
Such speakers may damage entry level AVR
Preferred to buy whole kit
If your sony HT has digital out use it. As it is Segate does NOT passthrough HD audio

AVR should be safe if played at moderate volumes. And these speakers sound so bad at high volumes that chances of someone doing that for extended duration of time are less.

Even then protection circuit should shut off the AVR before any damage is done.

I used Yamaha AVR with Sony HTIB speakers for few months. It worked fine and sound quality was amazing (as compared to original HTIB).

Thanks for all the reply and apologies for the late response, I was busy @ office last couple of days..I've an SPDIF out in the seagate, can I connect that to sony speakers directly? Also please recommend a few good home theater speakers(5.1 or 7.1) with receiver around 20-25k, if the SPDIF solution does not work, I wanted to buy a full kit.

You can not connect that directly to speakers. You need a new Kit. What is your budget?

You can buy a receiver for 20k from here (Yamaha RX-497). You can use it with your existing speakers or you can sell the whole HT system and use that buy entry level speaker package (coast 5 - 7k).

I think he is looking for 5.1 receiver..why you are suggesting stero receiver?
