High-sensitivity bookshelves

..Viren ji did explain everything to me. But I would like to hear few more audition experiences :).

Thanks,
John.
John, you have heard from one of the folks who can be really trusted in the audio business. Viren is a gentleman who has his own view/ philosophy on audio (as does every manufacturer) and he is completely honest about it and on it.

It is well worth a visit to Viren to listen to the system once to get an idea..you can always carry back the amp
I am not aware on the matching, but with horns quality is definitely preferred over quantity when it comes to Power

Sorry to hijack your thread...

Luckily, I have made up my mind re speakers, so the hijack doesnt matter so much anymore :)

1. I generally feel that the horn loaded speakers are pretty shrill / bright. Do Horne Grande has any of those issues. I have heard horn speakers from Klipsch and didn't like them for long listening sessions as it caused listening fatigue.

The classic Klipschorn and well-made horn speakers definitely dont sound shrill, especially when paired with the low-powered single-ended tube amps for which they are designed.

2. On the paper, the Horn Grande goes down only to 50Hz and Viren ji told me that in a typical room, I can get bass response down to 40Hz. I really don't care the specs on paper :). I would like to hear from you about the bass extension of Horne Grande. See I am not looking for chest thumping / earth shattering bass. But good deep bass that is necessary for Hindustani classical instrumentals and for some Rock and Pop songs I listen to.

There are very few instruments that go substantially deeper than 40Hz - a full-sized organ, to name one. Moving that much air is not easy. I dont listen to Hindustani classical, but i cannot think of any instrument off the top of my head which would require a deeper bass response. 90% of the large-scale symphonies I listen to dont go deeper than 40-45Hz and neither does most pop music (that boom-boom bass you get is typically a higher frequency: 60-100Hz).

I disagree with Viren on one thing - if you need deeper response, you can certainly get a good-quality subwoofer to mate well with regular speakers. Properly set-up, with a high-quality crossover and adjustable gain, it adds in the missing bottom octave but without overpowering the "main" sound. My old rig was testimony to this, atleast to my ears. But that may also be a matter of individual preference.

Tell me about it :) used to run dual rels earlier. Although getting them to dial in was a long story

^^ I used a sound meter and a Stereophile test CD to dial in the sound. That worked quite well, actually... in about 30 min i had the subwoofers meshing perfectly (for my ears anyway - and I admit I care more about true-to-life musicality rather than audiophilia).

Hi,
I was a Virenji's place last saturday with Heliumflight (BTW, I am thankful to him for introducing me to Virenji) to pick up DHT pre which he built it for me in a week's time
just so I could take it home to test it out. Thanks Virenji.

While at his place we auditoined his creations -the Grande speakers with both GM70 & SET. What can I say! its all been said and repeat, they are simply magical.
No shrills, just very lively with mesmerising mids. As mentioned by Helium, the GM70 are better with bass.
Vireji explained that though the SET is good enough for the Grande Horn speakers,
the extra power from GM70 will help with where dymanics matter.

My wife was so in love with those that she hinted I chuck my recently acquired Tannoy MG 15 (Thanks to a FM from whom I got these).

I also have Virenji's EL84 integrated amp and must add, they are all rounders. They are very musical to me with a nicely defined bass.
I hooked them up with my Tannoys and boy! they do rock them.

In my opinion the magnitude of bass delivered by a tube is very different and lower to a good SS. For that punch, its only a SS that can do deliver, for soulful music its the Tube.
Its this mix I am trying to experiment with at the moment.

BTW, Virenji has added an extra line out to the DHT for those who would like to add a sub.

Hi AVM, are these the 15" Tannoy Gold Monitor ?
Would love to hear more and see some pics if you can.

Hi arj,

Yes, these are the 15" Tannoy MG. Unable to attach pics at the moment.
I shall post them soon.

Hi arj,

Sorry, the pics took some time coming up.

Thank you for sharing the Pics AVM !:clapping: loved them and hope to hear them ..maybe once we decide to do a long hoped vacation to the Andamans.

These are perhaps the best drivers Tannoy has ever made and was hoping to put one of these in a custom enclosure before i ended up with my Tannoys

I would recommend giving these more power, than what their sensitivity suggest . if you ever start thinking on those lines as they sing at a different level.

But these, even working below their true potential with lower powered amps, blow the socks of most other speakers...
I do also believe in Quality of power > Quantity of power, but quality being the same Quantity has a fantastic impact...the impact is sadly on the most sensitive area...the pocket :(

Arj,
Absolutely agree to the Quality v/s Quantity. Infact I am on that path currently.
I had paired the Tannoys to Lyrita audio DHT preamp and Luxman M4000 poweramp rated at 180 watts/ch @ 8 ohms (a monster gear)and now currently running them using an Lyrita Audio EL84 pushpull amp rated at 10 watts/ch.
I haven't had much of listening with the DHT/Luxman as there was an phat kind of sound from the speakers.Sensing trouble I have given the Luxman for a check and hopefully should be set with a thorough service (its about 34 years old).

The EL84 is a superb allrounder. The speakers sing when the EL 84 is pushed to its max, but by then it is very working hard and running out of steam.
Virenji suggests reserve power is required to get more out of these speakers.
However with the Akai speakers the EL84 is very comfortable driving them.

I shall soon be getting a pair of EL34 mono blocks (not sure of power rating, but definitely more powerfull than the EL84) from Virenji to test them out.

Have a nice trip and hope to meet you sometime.

Regards
