somebody popped in a couple of tiny holes on the back of a pair of sonus faber concertinos to mount them on a wall.

would this have damaged :

1. the essential integrity of the speaker where the cabinet is supposed to be leak proof (can this be overcome by filling in the holes with something like wood putty etc?)

2. damage the crossover circuit within (which is normally supposed to be mounted on the back wall of the speaker)

appreciate any insight on this.

:mad:Is the speaker still working? If yes, ask that somebody to try with a longer drill bit and this time aim a little higher:rolleyes:.

EDIT: Sorry about my ^ comment mate, couldn't resist. Here, I am still trying to recover from my accidentally breaking the cantilever\stylus while cleaning my TT last weekend. Easy mistake but an expensive one especially since the cartridge costs $550......and here somebody decides to knowingly drill a couple of holes. About your query, I think plugging the holes with caulk(Silicon Gel) may help. Quickest way to find out if the crossover has been damaged is to listen to the speakers and check if both tweeter and mid-bass drivers are playing. Hope the damage is not too much and can be reversed. All the best!!. Please tell that someone to use stands for these speakers or make a shelf and place them on it.

Hi nandac,
Speaker cabinets are built with a purpose, with ports, without ports (sealed), open baffle (no cabinets) etc. You simply cannot drill holes into your speaker cabinets at your will. This can seriously change the sound signature, or even can mess up everything. As Santosh has already said, if all drivers are still producing sound, crossover is probably not damaged, but then I am no expert on these things. Anyway, I'd try to seal the cabinet back again somehow, but be careful while doing it so that stuff inside may not get damaged.
Regards.

OT:
Santosh, very sorry to hear about the accidental breaking of your stylus/cartridge. If I am not too mistaken, this is the same TT I considered buying twice, once from Manav and a second time from Sid Trehan, still regret not buying it. Which cartridge is it? Is it the Rondo Red? Please start a new thread on it so that other guys can learn from your mistake/accident? Sorry for the OT, mods and OP.

these are speakers i am interested in buying. my carpenter who has done sound proof work before says he can plug in the holes with silica. would that really fix it? is it worth it to spend 600 - 700 dollars to buy this set of speakers?

If I understand right, you are looking to buy speakers that have holes at the back? If so, I would avoid them completely, or get them at very low prices.

Speakers such as Sonus Faber are made with extreme care. Unless a person knows what he is doing, it will be very difficult to repair them. You can always write to Sonus Faber themselves who will advice you of the right steps to take.

If you already have the speakers, write to Sonus Faber.

Cheers
