Okay, here is what i have:

Speakers: Logitech 2.1 which only have 3.5mm jack for audio input
TV: LG which has only Digital optical out for audio.
AV: Yamaha V373 :yahoo:

Now, i want to listen my TV audio on the 2.1. What should i do ?

Can i do this:

Process1:
1. Connect the TV optical out to optical audio IN of AV
2. Get a stereo RCA Male to 3.5mm female jack and connect it to Audio output of AV
3. Plug in the 2.1 into the above 3.5mm female.

Process 2:
Or, i can also simply plug the 2.1 into headphones jack of AV instead of step 2&3

What would be different if i do the process 1 or process 2.

I was reading the AV manual and it says connect ONLY recording devices to Audio OUT, what does that mean ? I cannot connect my speakers to Audio out from AV ?

If your AVR has headphone out then connect the 3.5mm jack of the speaker system to it. Don't you have a 5.1 speaker system?

Yes, the mentioned avr has a 3.5mm jack. I will connect my 2.1 system via it.

Also, i read that rx-v373 does not deliver analog audio output if audio input to it is via digital.

No, i do not have a 5.1 speakers, i plan to buy a set in future.

I however have a sony hifi lying useless, is it possible to connect the 5 speakers from it to avr? They plug into the sony main unit via plain push plugs so can i take then out from sony unit and plug them into the avr? The bookshelf speakers have inbuilt bass box and produce ok bass.

Please advice

If you have two speakers, connect those to the Front Left & Front Right ports on AVR. The AVR has programs to select 2 channel output from speaker. This should work even if you connect optical cable between TV and AVR.

You can use the Sony speakers. Using them in stereo mode will be better as without the subwoofer the 5.1 effect may not be enjoyable.

Actually the 5 speakers in sony system are as follows:

2 bookshelf speakers with 2" tweeter and 7" woofer giving 100W each. I think it can give ok bass output as if we configure the avr to not having a sub it directs the low frequency to front speakers.
2 rear speakers giving 40W each
1 center speaker giving 40W

Now the problem is the front ones have impedence of 4 while rest have impedence of 8. The avr can be set to either 8 or 6 and at 6 we can attach 4ohm speakers to it. So, how do i set my avr?

Setting the fronts as full range will use them for bass. So select the speaker type as 5.1. You can safely use the speakers, but set a limit on maximum volume.
