Hi There,

This is my current set up.

Media Player <HDMI> AVR <HDMI> TV
Set Top Box <RCA> AVR <HDMI> TV

Now I have connected my TV to the Home Wi -Fi network and am able to stream Youtube, Picasa, Weather etc directly from the TV. But obviously the sound comes from the TV speakers only...

Is there a way to get this sound to the AVR and then to the speakers? Can the same HDMI which is connected from the AVR to TV bring the Audio signals back from TV to AVR or will I need to get the Audio Out via RCA from TV and into RCA in of AVR?

Please advise...

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the AVR is Denon 1911, and it has ARC feature. I guess this feature helps me to get Audio from the TV to the AVR... but this is what I am not able to figure out..

Not sure about ARC, but use the monitor out to connect into the AVR as an input. It will be stereo though but if you want multichannel sound, use something like Neo, PLX II etc

Hi Santhosh,

Thanks for the reply, so you're saying Monitor Out form the TV to the Audio IN of the AVR?

Denon 1911 has the ARC feature (which is a function of the HDMI version), but as far as i know even the TV has to have this feature so that the video part it taken in through the HDMI and the audio is filtered and sent back through the HDMI cable back to the AVR. But this will work only for signals being sent by the AVR to TV and not for the videos etc streaming from your home network directly to your TV.

The other way of course is as pointed out by santosh, connect the audio out (stereo) via RCA from TV to the AVR (DTV/Cable-IN etc).

cheers

I have had a similar set up in the past when I was connecting my LCD TV's audio out to AVR.
First, understand that you need an HDMI out (or at least an Optical out) to get 5.1 audio to your AVR. For that, you need to first see if you have an Optical Audio Out interface on your TV. Most new TVs these days have it, however I am yet to see or hear of a TV with HDMI out.
If your TV does have Optical Out, you then have to make sure that it supports 6 channels (5.1). You can ask this to the technical customer care and they should let you know in no time.
I hope it will help you.

@ all above, thanks.
I was searching for the specs of the TV (P42V20D), which is pretty new.. and found this.

HDMI Input/ Support Feature 4 (1 side, 3 rear)/ Audio Return Channel (Input 2) / Content Type (Any Input)

So I need to go home tonight and check the rear of the TV for something called Input 2 on the rear... Wonder what kind of Input this is... HDMI or analog.

Secondly, I am pretty sure my TV also supports ARC ( may be thru the above port on its rear)... in that case 1 HDMI cable should be able to hand 2 way data? Right?

But what confuses me is, right now the HDMI cable goes from the Monitor Out of the AVR to the HDMI input of the TV (one of the 4 available)... So if somehow the TV starts sending Audio signals back to the AVR, Will the AVR understand them if they are reaching Monitor Out?

Logically it should be an input port on the AVR, right?

You are right... Analog outs from TV into AVR input. Some TVs come with optical outs, you could use that if your TV has it.

Nope, HDMI will not return the audio signal from your TV to AVR. Atleast not yet.

Not all HDMI IN ports on a TV are ARC enabled. It is specifically mentioned which one supports and sometimes is also marked among the HDMI IN ports. In your case it seems to be Input 2.

Yes, you just need one single HDMI cable for signals going to & from it.
HDMI cable needs to be connected from the AVR HDMI OUT to Input 2 of HDMI IN in your TV.

No. For ARC its always the HDMI OUT in the AVR and HDMI IN in TV. That's how ARC is made to work. AVR will automatically understand if it's receiving any signal from the TV.

Ok so I came home and confirmed a few things...

my TV does have ARC and its HDMI INPUT #2 at the rear of the TV, it says HDMI 2(ARC) clearly mentioned there...

And my AVR also supports ARC...
I moved the HDMI cable that connect my TV n AVR to Input #2 on my TV...
AVR Side, its still at HDMI Out..

But still, the sound comes only from the TV speakers.. not the AVR :(

Inputs?

Snorkel,
I checked out the Pana V20 today at my in-law's place. It has an optical out, monitor out as well as the ARC. You should be able to output audio from your TV into your AVR using any of these options.

Hi Santhosh, n others, thanks for your tips. I got it all figured out.

All I had to do was to move the HdMI cable from HdMI 1 to HDMI 2, on my V20D, which is the ARC enable HdMi port.

The next thing was that on my tv I had to change the audio out option of the Tv, called Vierra Link to Home Cinema system. The moment I did that, the beautiful sound appeared on the speakers.
Also the AVR shifted to TV input source when I did the above....

Thanks all, this helped me avoid using another RCA cable.... Thanks to ARC, one more advantage utilized of buying the Devon 1911, and the V20D :)

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
