Two two-way speakers are installed in the trunk lid of the car. Recently the whole trunk lid has started rattling/vibrating a lot when I crank up the volume. It rattles more when the lid is closed than when the lid is opened (at any angle). It appears more if looked/listened from the outside. I have tightened all screws/nut/bolts, the lid lock, nevertheless.
Will filling up the empty space inside the lid with something......say with something like scrap foam used in sofa sets.......reduce the rattling? I also have a lot of white 0.5mm foam sheets (the ones used to wrap appliances/TVs) lying around. Would they be useful?

The only way to rid your car of rattles is by damping. You could buy dampmat/noisekill/ dynamat and stick them on the internal panels. Check ebay.in for dampmat and its the cheapest damping material available in india, since its locally made. The others will cost you an arm and a leg.

For the bootlid you could always use cotton waste, and fill up the crevices and hollows. But you need to ensure that water seepage doesnt happen into the bootlid and also the cotton waste should be completely dry before you stuff it in.

Wanna go the diy and budget way, heres something I did on a friends swift which would rattle like crazy. The thread is here : DIY : Damping the swift with yoga mats and making it rattle free - Team-BHP

Additionally, before applied damping, you should apply small balls of putty at the point of joint/overlapp of two metal part. E.g. If outer metal is supported by some metal pipe or mold then there is some feeling applied inform of small dots of putty. If that falls apart the you will experience more rattle/vibration.

Unfortunately I don't need the whole box, just enough to dampen the trunk lid.
I went to the market on saturday in search for any kind of damping mats/material. All efforts went in vain. Pune is a hopeless place. I found one dealer selling one sided glued 3mm rubber sheet 1m X 2m for Rs.900. He seemed too busy in his own world rather than entertaining his customers. So came back empty handed. :(

If its 1mx 2m that should be more than enough for the boot lid and some white cotton waste should do the trick. Idea is to make the boot lid heavy.

BTW what car is this ?
