I see this all the time, across multiple areas of life. The "kiss" method being used in places where it shouldn't be.
 
Cognitive effort requires energy…

There is this book "Thinking fast and slow" which describes many experiments where brain resorts to "simple" outcomes instead of spending more energy to analyze. They call it system 1 (easy, simple, biased, practiced) and system 2(doubting, analysing, calculating, etc.)
