LED or LCD

LED TVs also use LCD panels with LED for back-lighting. So except black, all colours will look the same. In LED you get real richer black. Also, LED TVs are slimmer than LCD.

My personal opinion is LED TVs are better than LCD, but current price difference does not justify the advantages. So if budget is not a problem for you, go for LED TV. There is not going to be big difference even if you go for LCD.

LEDs are not made to last in Indian conditions...too much fluctuation & yr panel will take a toss very soon...safer to stick with LCDs - they are repairable. Also LEDs are too harsh on the eyes when viewed for longer hrs.

As earlier post tells, no difference between LCD and "LED" TVs! They are same and only the backlight changes between the two and LEDs are used basically to reduce power consumption and make the panel thin.

I am amused the way you have built a theory around that! Whats the basis of such theory, I would like to know :)

The only diff b/ween LCD & LED is the presence / absence of LED bulbs.

LED tvs hv LED bulbs to backlight the panel (which are not present on the LCD tvs) - that LED bulbs are sensitive to power fluctuations is a known fact...yes, they do consume less power. But when fused one cannot replace just one bulb on the panel...the entire panel has to be replaced..the cost of which is more than 1/2 that of the tv...all the best!

When except the source of lighting, both function on similar principal, what is the logic in the statement unless the LED has locally dimming option. Can it be substantiated by data?

I have been going through this forum for a couple of weeks only to get more confused :( Hoping that other experts would pitch in this thread to help all newies like me.

Thanks corElement

LCD = panel
LED = backlight

LCD uses two types of backlights, cfl and led

led is efficient, does not lose brightness over time as fast as cfl.
Does not attract bugs as it does not emit infrared.

Understand the tech first before decisions =)

There are 3 types of backlighting in most lcd screens as of 2012.

1. CFL = thicker, emits infrared and attracts bugs, thicker, can be overly bright and has shorter brightness lifespan over time, heats up more.

2. Edge lid LED = Very thin, does not emit infrared so you can watch tv without bugs covering the screen during bug season, more efficient, does not heat up as much, brightness stays longer over time, not as super bright as cfl but it's more practical.

3. Full LED = Very expensive, so just forget about it :P

IMO I would go for led for long term benefits.
