There Can be a lot of other replacements too,
You can Try The Rasberry Pi and Arduino, if you know linux and can easily create a pretty useful streaming device under $20, but this thing is a killer. 4X USB 2.0

Thank you, that looks really interesting. I wonder what the starting price of non-audiophile-but-listenable USB speakers would be for a kitchen pseudo-Boom?
I'm not sure that my wife would actually use it --- but anything would sound better than playing music on her phone speaker.
Afterthought: would something like an ODAC fit inside? Even if it needed internal flyleads to case-mounted sockets?
