I had a lot of fun over the last one week, watching Luther and Rudra together.

For those in the dark, Rudra is an official remake of Luther that ran for 5 seasons from 2010 to 2019. Luther has Idris Elba as DCI John Luther, while Rudra has Ajay Devgn as DCP Rudraveer Singh or Rudra. Only Season 1 of Rudra has been released.

For once, Bollywood seems to have outdone Hollywood. Those most episodes are scene for scene copy, certain changes have been made to suit the Indian palate.

More important, Ajay seems to fit the role pretty well. He comes across as a strong but troubled police officer who is obsessed with fighting crime. Ajay seems to extend his role from Gangaajal, Shingam, Sooryavanshi, etc.

Though Idris has the same role, he comes across as an actor who is embarrassed with his size and height, and overacts many times. Even when he is interviewing a suspect, he never sits facing the suspect, but sits sideways and crouching. Ajay, on the other had sits straight and stares into the suspect’s eyes trying to understand his or her mindset.

In Episode 3 a criminal uses the media to protect himself, and prove he is being falsely accused and harassed by the police. He is also protected by a court order that prohibits the police from going near him unless they have irrefutable proof. In Rudra, in the final scene in a boat, the criminal, once he realizes he has been outwitted, beats himself up and breaks his own arm to prove the police are harassing him. In Luther, there is a lame ‘turn around’ order from Luther who walks the criminal out of the boat. Ajay calmly sits out the criminal antics, while Idris seems in a hurry to finish the episode.

Overall, Rudra is more balanced though they obviously cannot replicate the US environment. I cannot wait for Season 2 that is supposed to release in 2023.
