hi,

i just got hold of this really old AVR... got it for Rs.5500!! the guy who sold it had it paired with a 5.1 JBL with FS fronts... didnt really like the sound of the speakers... very muffled... maybe had the tweeters blown... but the centre and the surrounds were amazing...

the reason why he sold the AVR was cause he recently bought an onkyo 3300 and is very happy with it...

the AVR and the speakers were gifted to him by his brother who bought them in the US... the equipment says it is made in Korea...

my current (rather previous) setup was a pair of wharf 10.1 and norge 2060... never really wanted to get an AVR cause i mostly listen to music but the asking price of this piece was too lucrative to let go...

got this thing home... connected my speakers... (source- seagate FT+>> HDMI>> sony TV>> AVR) and i was amazed!!

i was not sure if the AVR would sound better than the stereo amp but i was wrong... the sound was controlled, the bass tighter and the vocals really came out... on my norge i had to turn the bass knob to 9'o clock position to prevent the boom but this was really really tight at flat... i think i'm gonna use this till i get a new stereo amp!

concerns- need your help guys:sad:

no manual... searched online but unable to find one

the eq settings (bass, treb, bal) on the face dont work and cant find it on the remote either

there is usually a red light that glows in the optical in but there is nothing glowing in this one... could it be broken?

the surround modes (hall, church etc..) aint working.. not that i need them but still...

need some info on this amp... cant find anything on the net... seems to be as solid state amp as mentioned in one of the sites... can someone elaborate.. this is a 1998 model...

Seems strange.

My 1993 model Yamaha DSP-2070 have so much info on net, I can find operating manual on Yamaha's dedicated manual website:) & also service manual but for this Marantz released in 1998, not a single info anywhere on the web.

Very strange.

Hey man its true that I love my Yamaha, but at the same time I do have lot of respect for Marantz amps.

Ofcourse they have different sound signature than that of Yamaha, but different people have different tastes and anybody who gives preference to mids over highs & lows will go for Marantz.

I just said that like Yamaha, Marantz too should have a dedicated website so that others can get the manual & other details of their older models as & when required.

found this on a website..

"FWIW I do a lot of HT as well as music on the HT system.
I also have a HT marantz setup in a 2 channel, and compare it to my 2226 vintage marantz.

This is my thought.

Sometime in 95-96-97-98-99 when HT was taking off companies made good musical amps and endowed them with HT specific dolby 5.1 or 7.1 decoding ability. The yamaha DSP series is an example of that. So is the marantz sr580 I use as 2 channel but its dolby ability is decidedly poorer than my DSP3090.
The result was hideously expensive receivers - like the dsp3090 that listed for 2499 in 2000. Soon enough they figured out that all the end users were running crap like bose crap for surround sound, and they could not tell sound stage from a hole in the ground and they wised up. The amps got less and less musical but better and better at dolby.
I have run the rx-v3300 yamaha by no means a cheap receiver, against my dsp3090.

For movies and home theater they are awfully close. Music is where the dsp3090 shines especially if you have the kind of speakers I do.

If all the roads are straight, why make a car that can corner ... if all the speakers are bose, why make an amp that can make nice music.

My marantz sr580 is a shade better than the dsp3090 for music. However its much much worse for Home theater.
My Kenwood vr517 actually works better than it for HT but its a POS compared to the marantz for music.
My thought is -
New amps can be musical, but you may have to hunt and buy the right one.
New amps are all pretty good for HT though some are better than others.
No old amp will work for HT."

seems these were actually stereo amps converted to surround amps...
