Marantz SR5005 Vs Denon 1912

All,

I happened to listen to these two receivers today at SoundScape, Pune.

Source: Denon Bluray Player.. Did not bother about the model.. Speakers were Focal Chorus 726.. I actually wanted him to pair a speaker which has Bright sound as i have Paradigm 9.. Was planning to go for KEF Q300 but then went ahead with Focals..

Impression:

We started with Marantz.. He had only Taal's CD so listened to couple of songs then demoed Casino Royal bluray... Music was good, detailed but bright may be because of speakers.. Marantz lacked the punch for movies.. Mids were weak.. Gunshots were not like gunshots.. Bass was awesome but that is because of the MONSTER subwoofer he had..

Then moved to Denon 1912.. again same songs and same movie.. Music was ok, a little brighter than Marantz but movie performance was awesome.. Now Gunshots were like Gunshots.. Surround effects were pretty awesome.. Mids, Dialouges were good..

Could not listened to Yamaha AVR but i think it's hard to choose between Denon and Yamaha for movies...

All in all, Marantz is anyday better than Denon for MUSIC and Denon is better for MOVIES..

Lot of people already know that but just wanted to share my experience..

yea thats true. Last month i've auditioned marantz sr5005 and denon 1912 with MS carnival 8, and i've also same experience as yours. but two days ago, i got a chance to demo marantz sr5006 & denon 1912 with MS Aviano 6.This time it was completely different.
Source was philips bdp5200.
Music: jagjit singh (tere aane ki jab khabar...) & a r rahman connections.
Movies: Tron & ZNMD bluray

This time i was blown away with the performance of marantz. i've not expected this from marantz as marantz is known for music, but this time movie performance was better than sr5005.
Next when switched to denon 1912, first impression was, something is missing compared to 5006, dialogs were not that much clear, highs & mid-highs were messed up. Overall detailing was missing.

So, as per my suggestion for all those who've demoed marantz sr5005, try to take a demo of marantz sr5006, you will not be disappointed.

Lastly i think there is some problem in denon xx12 series. i've compared 1611 vs 1612 & 1911 vs 1912 with polk audio tsi300 & tsi400. older xx11 series offer much higher performance and stability than xx12.

Yes,5006 is certainly better than 5005-

I cancelled Denon 1912 & placed order for Marantz 5006...seems i made a very good decision

Funny I was talking to an old audiophile yesteday and he claimed that he has trouble with 2 Marantz 7005 AVRs. One did not power on, on another he found center channel was not working. Scared towards the Denon 4312 / Integra 50.3 / Onkyo NR1009.

Anyone report service issues with Marantz AVRs?

Buddy, could not get a chance to listen to HK avrs.. Finally bought Marantz SR5006 and am happy with it.. Initially sound was not that great but after some changes it's good now.. both for movies as well as for music.. However it'll not give me a stereo sound as produced by dedicated amplifier but it's still pretty much ok..

Did run Audyssey setup couple of times.. did some manual changes and all is fine now.. still sometimes i feel that fronts are prominent than center.. will keep tweaking it for balanced perfomance..

good vikram.. if you are happy with the sound then nothing like it. Try tweaking the gain settings for the center speaker manually. I used to use the Ezset ( equv of Audyssey ) on my HK but i now prefer to set things manually.. actually its quite logical and easy.

post some pics if you can. For movies.. dont worry too much about the fronts anyways the center does most of the talking.. the fronts come into play less than the center does. And maybe after some weeks the fronts will set in too ( or maybe your ears will get adjusted ) )

If the Marantz has pre outs.. look for a NAD or suitable integrated and you will be on your way.

I think you went for the MS Aviano 2's no ? These are supposed to gell well with Marantz.

BTW, which center have you got ?

I sold Aviano 2 few weeks back.. using monitor 9 now..

I already had Yamaha center and surround package.. will keep using it for the time being..

No plans for adding a power/intg amp in near future.. have already spend way over my budget.. )

I am fine with the speakers now as they r not that bright with Marantz.. if i get a buyer, i'll sell them else will keep using them..

hi sagar congrats for ur marantz 5006..me too got it recently and i connected my polk speakers...for me the rite out of box performance was quite satisfying both for movies and music...i did setup audyssey n made quite difference but for music it is smthing which i wasn't liking on listening for longer time n then i reset d microprocessor n happy to got the sound back which i liked...i.e out of box setting.

Wow !...glad to stumble on this SR5006 vs 1912 discussion. It has been driving me crazy last few days reading expert & user reviews in multiple forums. Next step for me is to find where to get a Demo of both in Bangalore and ofcourse after that the best price.

But Vikram: Congrats !. How much did you finally pay for SR5006 ? And from where ? ( I mean local shop vs Online vs Group Buy) Have you connected the full 7.1 or only part ? Have you tried the Network features, DLNA or Airplay ? Too many Qs - you can post as you explore and have info for us.
