Musical IQ

Stunningly accurate information ℹ️ the same applies to musical equipment such as amplifiers today as well as streamers . Full of digital layers which break ⛓️💥 💔 easily.

Not entirely sure that expensive and well built equipment manufacturers plan time bound obsolescence. May be true for cheaper equipment.
But interesting possibility to keep in mind when buying electronics.

TBH I am a little guilty of listening to some kinds of music this way. Most modern pop or electronic music is rarely available as an album. In fact most modern artists release music as singles. Consumption of music has definitely changed. My niece who just turned 30 rarely listens to an entire song let alone an entire album. The music is not designed to be listened as a body of work like before. EDM artists who are essentially DJs for example typically release their work as singles which are then compiled into albums by their music labels.

But having said that there are artists who do release entire albums. Maroon 5, Dua Lipa, Shawn Mendes, Kendrick Lamar and Teddy Swims to name a few all released very well made albums that absolutely follow the album as a "body of work" style. It just isn't the norm as it used to be. It could be argued by some that the new model is more flexible that allows smaller independent artists to release their work in smaller more manageable pieces.

As Dylan sang “Times they are a-changing”…. All the time.
We from the older generations grew up on albums with lyrics and styles that followed some themes and narratives. We did not have any other option while buying music for home listening.

But even then radio programs never or very rarely played full albums. Before DJs, there were RJs🙂

To be sure there were some artists whose albums that carried a theme or a narrative consistently and brilliantly throughout the album. But many more had great songs mixed with mediocre ones in the albums.

Compilation of music by various artists in albums has also existed for a long time.

With the advent of playlists and algorithms it has become very easy to pick a particular song or music from a streaming service and let the algorithm choose similar styles thereon.

The 45 minute limit on every album imposed by the physical media like vinyl is also meaningless in today’s world.

The only limitation seems to be our interest, attention span and available time to listen to music.

True artists will continue to create driven by a passion that seeks to express their feelings and ideas.
But the ability to do this consistently into full albums every time, across the span of their careers? Difficult I think.
