After years of service my Pioneer DVD player seems to get in the old age now with some problems here and there. Sometimes remote not working, sometimes not reading the disc, etc. Well I have no complaints because it served me well for 4 years.

Now since the time has come to change, I wanted the opinions of my fellow mates here. TO BEGIN WITH LET ME MAKE IT VERY CLEAR THAT SINCE I WOULD NOT BE USING THIS PLAYER TOO MUCH SO SQ & PQ ARE NOT TOO MUCH OF A BOTHERRATION FOR ME AND IF YOU READ BELOW YOU SHALL KNOW WHY.

Some pointers:
1. I do not have a lot of blu ray discs
2. I will sometimes play my cds through the player
3. Dvds I have and I will use this player to play
4. I have WD TV live through which I can play most of all my softwares
5. But if the BDP can do what my WD TV live can, then will pass on the media player to my brother.

Now since I am changing, I thought of taking the Blu ray player so that I am set for some years in the future. Dont have a 3d tv so I dont really care for 3D. I am more of a music guy but surely would need a player for playing my hardware.

Another thought which occurred to my mind was: although I would not use my player extensively and anything decent would anyways not cost me below 10K, should I go and buy PS3. It maybe a slightly more expensive option but in this way I got the following covered in one device: gmaes, dvd, br, acd, soft media, etc.

Suggestions are invited for a player that is most apt to my conditions. I like the Sony BD 370. Read a lot about it and found to be pretty good.

Also I would be travelling to Singapore & Malaysia in another 20 odd days. So should I wait and get it from there. also suggestions about places, etc to get it from in these countries.

Any kind of help is more than welcomed. :)

I am kind of in the same boat as you. Whenever I read posts, I see the region free discussion comes up with respect to the Blue ray disc players. How important are they.

The reason being Blu ray disc players which are region free cost a ton more than the regular ones.

Region free is useful only when we import blu ray discs from US.

Your thoughts.

Thanks
Pandu

The biggest advantage the Playstation has over the other good players is the ability to play AWESOME video games. If you are not serious about gaming, my vote would go for a BDP instead. If you end up with the PS3, please buy the remote. Using the DS3 controller as a remote is like using a chainsaw for brain surgery.

Also, Sony gets hacked all the time now :)

With the growing demand for bluray's most of them will be released as ABC regions in future. Unless you are expecting to import only region A ones for discounted price thru deals in the states.

My vote PS3 - But still I suggest you to treat PS3 primarily as a gaming device. Or you can also look at Xbox 360 for gaming and get a region free bluray player in future ....

Bluu,

Since you own both rival gaming devices , which one do you think is the best device for gaming ? Xbox or PS3 ?

Performance
Graphics
Cost

Frankly I would be buying it just as a standby device. Neither will I use it too much fir games nor would it be too much for blu ray play.
That's the reason of confusion

I own the first generation X360 (2007, I think) and other X360 owners will be amazed to know it has not died so far! However, it does not support HDMI so I don't get maximum PQ. In that regard, I prefer my PS3. The X360 controller is much, much better than the DS crap. I think the newest X360 holds the edge over the PS3 but I have no firsthand experience.

I think dropping 20K odd on a PS3 as a standby device is a bit much. Just get a decent BDP, IMO.

OK, but wouldn't you be able to get a good BDP for not that much either? It sounds like your mind is leaning towards the PS3 :)

Oh, I know nothing about Blu-rays or BDPs. I bought a PS3 way before BDPs became cool! I'm not much of a movie guy any more. I watch them on my laptop with my awesome Altec Lansing desktop babies!

Since you are quite clear that the BDP will be sparingly used, go for something with decent reviews, a cheap price-tag and reasonable warranty.

So should I got with the onida one making rounds or Sony one? Or wait and get from Singapore

Hi Denzong
Here's my two cents
I have a PS3 phat 80gb linux PC version. Sony took away that capability via update 3.20 in March 10, so its not good vfm anymore for primary BD use as there are good BD players at half the cost eg sony bdp-s370. For games, the graphics & video rendition is slightly better but the titles are very dear unlike xbox titles. BD isnt available as much so it doesnt justify the cost for a bdp, so go in for this if you arent into gaming but want an all-in-1 HD AV setup incl 2tb disk capacity, internet music/video/radio/dvd or bd player plus something that plays all formats, then look up dune prime base 3.0 for abt usd 300 and dune BD prime for abt usd 400. If u arent into gaming, u cant get better.

I think you are certainly going overboard to replace a cheapo DVDP. What is preventing you from getting a cheap DVDP and continue on. If money is not a concern then certainly go ahead and pick anything you want but I am not convinced in your approach to replacing the broken DVDP.

well if that was the case then i would have gone an bought a Chinese one for sure. i dont have a requirement of blu ray, etc....but tomorrow if my wife startes buying all that or my kids want to play more of their cartoon stuff then i dont want to go and buy another player.

since the use would not be that much (currently) thats why i am looking for a decent one. not the real high ones. if you see i have even asked about the onida ones.

its just that rather then spending every 1-2 years, i did rather buy a decent one. tastes might change soon.... eg. i took a real big fancy to music recently (8 months back) and now i have built a very decent system since Dec 2010. (in my signature below i just had the pana & vide 32, the yamaha ht and the pioneer dvd, rest all came in post Dec 2010). so hope you understand my point here.

tomorrow i may start burning my music on discs and start listening. i mean anything can happen in the near future and if i have to put in around 3k for a dvd player then why not a decent bdp for 8-9k.

Where do you think the Oppo's are made?? Good old China.

I do understand your point of view however, you are the best judge for your wife's thought process (if you have been able to figure out that already) or your kid's wishes. Other readers of your forum can only suggest based on your decision. If you want to future proof, then a BDP is a cheaper choice than a video game player esp. if your kids don't get into them in the next few years.

actually come to think of it....forget the wife and kids choices (yeah i know if it was that easy :D), the first lesson i studied in economics is coming back to me after all these years: WANTS ARE UNLIMITED :ohyeah:

i just hope that my kids do not start the gaming scene soon cause their cartoon network has already costed me another tv, so i do not want to give them the ps3 remote in hand so soon (and the time they want all that i am sure they would want something better then a ps3 ).

thus i think the best would be a get a bdp. now the question here is: Onida/Sony/Dune.... Oppo can also be a choice but dont see much VFM for me

checked on the prices:

Sony BDP-S370 Blu Ray Player @ Rs. 8990
Onida BDX1110 Blue-Ray Player @ Rs. 9190
LG BD550 Blu-Ray DVD Player @ Rs. 7490
Philips BDP3000/05 Blu-ray Player @ Rs. 7999

i can buy a BDP from singapore as well. so it might happen that i might a better bdp around Rs.10k

pls suggest

One other thing to consider - you mention you are into music. If you have or plan to get any SACD or DVD-A (even though they are not very popular formats), then you may want to factor that in your decision. Oppo can play all of them, PS3 (at least the older fat one) can play SACD. But my PS3 is somewhat noisy, and also a power hog. But even then it plays what it can beautifully and the interface is great and the remote (if u get the separate one) is bluetooth enabled, so does not need line-of-sight to operate. Does a great job of displaying photos as well, and can do decent amount of streaming (DLNA-based, not SMB) within its format limits.

But if you don't need all these features, a regulad BDP will be just fine. I would probably go for the S370, but haven't really compared all of them.
