Hi!

I am planning to go US for couple of weeks this month. Is it a good idea to get a AVR from there? if yes, which model. My budget is around 300$ - 500$.

I am also open to buy the entire system with the speaker.(willing to shell out couple hundreds more). But the only problem is that it should work with 220V.

Thanks

Yes, Its good..best idea to get AVR from US because its very cheap and you get variety of models to choose unlike in india. I even got full home theater from US. But make sure the dimenstions of Speakers doesnt exceed the allowed dimension in the flight baggage. If you get satellite speakers not a problem. Only if you get tower speakers..keep it mind. And pack your AVR well so it doesnt get damaged.Wrap with more clothes so it doesnt get hurt in Transit. Generally its safe..

if 300$ to 500$ is for AVR alone , you can get ONKYO AVR with HDMI upscaling (not sure about the model number).Harmon kardon also good, but i didnt buy HK, because there's not much service centers out here in india. DENON also good ,but not sure it comes under this price range.Probably you can check with circuitcity/frys/Amazon/crutchfield for deals.

You have to spend another 500$ for good speakers and subwoofer. You can search in this forum discussion to find out the good speakers/subwoofers.

Speakers to consider - Paradigm/Wharfedale/Kilpch comes under this price range.

Keep it mind ..If we buy the system from US we have to get step down transformer to make it work in India. But its not a problem at all ..It will cost you around 1000 to 1500 Rs. But you saved a lot in a AVR as you get it from US.

There are a large number of threads discussing this topic. Please search before creating a thread.

Cheers

Its definitely good to buy from US, if your are going to carry it personally. Buying a HTIB or AVR is a separate topic to discuss. It depends lot on your taste and budget. You can find loads of thread on these topics and get a good idea.

If you decide to buy only AVR these are few models to consider

1) Onkyo HT-SR608
2) Devnon AVR-1911
3) Yamaha RX-V667
4) Pioneer VSX-1020K

If you decide to buy HTIB these are few options to consider

1) Onkyo HT-S5300
2) Onkyo HT-S6300
3) Yamaha YHT-893

Be it AVR/HTIB if you buy in US, you need to buy a decent step down transformer to protect your valuable HT system.

lots of topic for the same issue.. however if its just a diff of few thousand bucks.. avoid.. as you will have
no warranty..
risk of damaging till you get it here.
power rating ( u will have to get a step down ) to run at 220v in india.

so chk and get it.. getting speakers is not a good idea.. however u can think of getting and avr.. but make it sure that if you planning to take that risk.. the margin of profit should be good enough to compensate the risk and step down..
