hi friends,
got new innova-VX 2 days back, has inbuilt head unit+ 6 speakers(4 doors + 2 front pillars), toyota doesnt give any info on type of system, preouts-outputs. now problem / good thing is new innova has 6.1 "touch panel audio -DVD(works with handbrk on only)+ BT + USB +AUX + Revrs cam + complt steering controls. one of our member's 2 yrs old post says innova OEM is panasonic (?).

now i dont want to let go this head units, coz its has lots of attach functionality, but not happy with overall sounds and wants to make it excellent- my other car with BLPNK + JBL 4 spk produce much better SQ. i listent to rock/ soft rock/country/ bolly/ ghazals/sufi

my budget is 20-30 k.... -SUB, which i can add later if i m not happy with overall performance. right now what i thought to add up 4 ch amp+ front comp + rear comp/coax+crossover..
as on first hunt..
infinity kappa comp- frnt spk- app 10.5 k
infinity refernce-6530 cs-rear- app 6 k
jbl amp- 646- 4 chnl- app 6.5 k........really skeptical about this

whats your suggestions...or reviews if u have used this.

thank you- ghanshyam

Infinity Kapa and Infinity Reference are good choice. Something like Kenwood M846 would be better choice over JBL amp. But, to make this setup work, your HU should have preouts.
If not, then you need a DSP which itself costs around 30K. But, provides unrivaled SQ.

IMO, all you need is good speakers and good cable

i know a person who does amazing fittings in the car, not like those commercial fitters

he gets speakers from outside, i can get you his phone number

( many frourm members from hyderabad know him , his name is raj, and his shop name is Avis Electronics , at R.P Road secunderabad )

you can contact him and get the speakers and cable ship to your place, and get it fitted with local tech, there, they sound real good

and you will wonder you would not need amp too after you install this speakers

Cheers

Hi Ghanshyam,

First of all, congratulations on your new Innova.. wish you many happy miles in it :)

Coming to the audio part, the OEM HU nowadays give pretty good features but may be a bit low on the output.

What you ideally need to do is to retain the HU, add a processor like matbhuvi has mentioned. You can check this one Audison Bit Ten. There are a couple of more products like this, cant dig out the links for some reason from my old email though.

I would also suggest that if you cannot stretch your budget, you could consider doing it in phased manner. Also remember to do Damping on your doors otherwise you would have the metal jarring when you increase the volume or with bass-heavy songs. This is a very important factor overlooked when installing car-audio. Couple of products for your reference are Dynamat and NoiseKill (dont have the link for it now).

@Tanoj: if all were required is just good speakers and wire, then there wouldnt be any requirement of amplifiers at all anywhere.

No offence meant, but you should understand that HU's have only a certain power to provide and it is exactly the same as with Home Audio, you could listen with a 10W amp and you could also listen with a 100W amp on a 100W rated speaker. The 100W amp would be able to drive the speakers better without clipping and provide lesser distortion and more volume to the sound. Probably that installer might be good in his own way, but just installing better wires and speakers alone wont give you the quality and quantity of sound that we aim for in cars.

I have been through multiple stages of car audio -not having an amp in my car, but with JBL speakers and ofc speaker cables, then adding an AMP did make a lot of difference and now my current setup is a 4 ch AMP with Sub, Illusion Audio components and Illusion Audio co-ax at the back with a dual din HU. Yes, additional power does help a lot when you want it in car audio.

Hope this helps ! and once again.. no offence meant.... :)

Cheers
happy hunting.

I did what you have planned to do now in my car couple of years ago. The result was horrible. If you connect an amp directly to the HU through speaker level input, you will end up with a prominent hiss. Most oem HUs are badly eq'd as well. Eventually I got installed a signal cleaner Audiocontrol LC6i between the HU and the amp. It sounded very good, but not as clean as a high end HU with preouts. If I were you, and if I would like to retain the oem head unit, I would just change the speakers. If you chose your speakers carefully, you can get good results. Just my opinion.

If you want to enhance the sound, then you definitely need to replace the head unit. Adding sub or amp is going to make the same sound louder that you have decided you dont like.

Majority of head units sound bright/harsh. Similarly with speakers.

In my experience, Clarion, Alpine, Kenwood and Pioneer are some of the better sounding ones. For speakers, you can use the same as above as well as JBL and Infinity.

Note also that if you are using badly recorded music either in CD or mp3 format, no system will magically make it sound better. Louder yes, better no! Save your money if this is the case.

Hi,

What soever would advice dont change your choice for speakers as mentioned by you, nothing like Infinity Kappa & Reference, you wont need sub with this if you get good power from HU / 4channel amp

Cheers...

hi guys..
thanks all of u for trying to help me.

i took long time to furher update my post the reason is i was trying to get informtaion from toyota people at local dealer level and toyota india's so called customer service back up- but it was all in vain...no info from anyone. toyota customer service has 4 times promised me they will get back to me within 24 hrs which nevere happened.

anyway ultimately decided we will open up the deck and see what they have given. for the matter of help to all hifivisions chap i took pictures of deck and speakers and have tagged it here. its fujitsuten compact system,,which seems to be of good built quality,,,specially the connectors are very good. there is no rating writen over it so no detail info of the system.

for me. i have opted out for focal's. after bit to trial and browsing. i tried kappa which was relatively sharper then focal, especially as right now i m not going out for sub,, i thoguht focals were taking care reasonable bass. i really liked focal polyglass-165 comp,, i opted it for front speakers. and for back gone for focal access coax.
amp i took is blaupank GT4 2011 Spec edition-- this decision was solely by recomendation by my audio guy... really dont know is the right choice or not.
as best thing would be go for good head units..but as i told theres lots of functions are attach to it..so i cant let it go.

i m sorry this is asking for url..i will post pics within day or two.

Aftermarket double-din DVD receivers/monitors come with parking brake wire (usually light green wire for Kenwood/JVC) whereby the installation manual says to connect it to the hand-brake. If connected this way, you can only watch movies if your vehicle is stationary and the hand-brake is pulled up.

But if you want to watch movies while the vehicle is either parked or running, then you will need to earth this wire by removing it from the hand-brake location and connecting it to any bare metal or screw nearby the hand-brake area.

I am not sure if the OEM head-unit (Fujitsu-ten) in the Innova has a wire that is also connected to the hand-brake.

REMARKS: Always remove your negative battery cable first prior to doing any wiring with your car-stereo otherwise you will end up frying up your electrical system in the car.....

"REMARKS: Always remove your negative battery cable first prior to doing any wiring with your car-stereo otherwise you will end up frying up your electrical system in the car....."
Reason? Is it because of the chance for shorting or something else?

Yep, I fried my 15 year old amp like french fries (my 1st expensive DIY experience).
