Dear Members,

The International Child Neurology Association (ICNA) is a global organization dedicated to promoting high standards in clinical care, education, and research in the field of child neurology. With over 3,500 members from 150 countries, originating from all six major geographic regions (North America, South/Central America, Europe, Africa, West Asia, East-Asia/Oceania), it is the largest child neurology society in the world and aims to connect investigators from resource-rich and resource-limited regions for clinical and research collaborations.

On behalf of the ICNA, we would like to invite you to join the "Neurology through Art and Time" initiative by the International Child Neurology Association (ICNA) which was launched in February 2023. The idea for this monthly series arose out of the fundamental appreciation that both the Arts and Sciences are creative processes that seek to reveal and increase our understanding of the patterns and truths of the natural world around us.

Our intent is to explore and understand the connections between art and medicine. We are inviting and encouraging our participants to use their imagination and to contribute their insights into how great art has illuminated, portrayed and paralleled the emerging concepts, complex patterns and evolution of medicine through the ages. The idea of reviewing and discussing a subject or theme in neurology as depicted through an artistic medium is both innovative and thought-provoking. One could choose a particular theme (e.g. neurodisability, muscular dystrophy, dystonia, stroke, neuropsychiatric disease, addiction, epilepsy, etc.) and have illustrative examples from art in multiple media. Alternatively, one could choose a single piece of art and delve into its meaning and significance in the context of a specific timepoint in history.
We are looking for works of art that highlight a seminal idea or moment in the history of Neurology. Please feel free to consider other possible compositions or scenarios. Artwork portraying the essence and creativity of Medicine and Science through paintings, sculptures, architecture, archaeology, music, cinema, and poetry/prose are within our scope.

In the words of David Brooks in his recent New York Times editorial entitled “The Power of Art in a Political Age” (March 2, 2023), art has the potential to humanize the beholder by impelling us to take a breath and open ourselves up in a new way to see the world in a more patient, just, and humble way. It also widens our emotional repertoire and our empathy for others and teaches us to see the world through the eyes of another who may see more deeply than we do.
