Hello All,

I have samsung, dvd player - some old CDs are not playing, however when I load the same in laptop they seem to play.

I just wiped them with a soft cloth and tried to play it, still didn't succeed

Is there a better way to clean them so that it plays in DVD player ?

NOTE - the dvd player is a new one, it does play new CDs though..

How old are the CDs -are they discoloured or have scratches on the playing surface ? You can try to clean the playing surface with some pure alchohol - even Vodka or Whisky -clean in a straight line -NEVER with a circular motion!

Since you mention that they played in your PC drive - do try them out on another CD player-if they work there, then the chances are your DVD player has not been properly configured to play older CDs - probably manufacturers do not anticipate people wanting to play CDs in DVDs players anymore. Do let us know how it goes.

Hi Balajeem,

The best is to download a software and rip the songs from those CDs to MP3, later you can burn the songs on a blank GOLD coated disc which will last longer.

As suggested, you can try wiping the CDs, mild detergent straight out direction like putting rays for a sun when you draw one!

Hope this helps

Nope.

Well, ok, maybe (in fact probably; most people can't) you won't be able to tell the difference if you rip to 320k MP3, but why go for lossy, when you can just as easily rip to lossless FLAC. Even if you can't hear the differenece.

thanks, cd does have scratches over the surface, will try your suggestion and get back -

One of the tricks that works is to use a device called 'lenspen' sold at good camera shops. It fills the scratches with carbon and makes the disc playable. I have not tried with very heavily scratched discs though.

Hi,
I had Samsung VCD and DVD players. Problem with both were that they were very intolerant to scratched discs. Even a tiny scratch and they would not play. I out of frustration junked them and purchased philips dvd player which played even the most horribly scratched discs.
I think Samsung does not incorporate error correction which help in ignoring scratches and play the disc. Also the disc finalization may have changed over the years. Best option is to burn new discs from old using your computer and use them.
