Hi All,

Thanks for all the information shared in this forum, very helpful ! Back to asking for some valuable advice....Sorry if this has been already addressed...My laptop which was primarily used for audio purpose crashed a week back. All my music files (Flac) were in that Laptop (currently trying to retrieve that)...I am told that the mother board needs to be replaced costing 20k

My laptop was connected to the external Dac (Halide Dac HD) which in turn fed the AVR or the Stereo amp. I had also connected the Laptop to my TV using the HDMI connection for streaming movies..

Now I am toying with the idea of buying another laptop

While my knowledge about configuration etc is near about zero...One of the options that I looked at was

1) HP 15-r022TX Notebook (4th Gen Ci5/ 8GB/ 1TB/ Free DOS/ 2GB Graph) (J6M27PA) - cost - 44k

Kindly suggest if there is a better way (cost effective) to address my needs of Music (80%) and movies (20%)

Thanks

Thanks Dheerajin...sorry should have mentioned this...but since I typically carry my laptop along with the dac to Kolkata where I can connect with an amp there...so I was looking for a portable option...that's why I was looking for a laptop with relatively large hard disk space...else was also thinking of getting a second hand laptop which can store some music and get a NAS at my home in Mumbai for more storage...but don't know anything how to go about installing that or what are the options if I were to take that route...

why would u need a Ci5 laptop for just music.. why not just a netbook or base laptop with DOS and build it .. max 20-22k

anything with bare win7 (you can install) , 2 gb ram , dual core processor and a 320-500 gb HDD will do i assume...

if you still want more multimedia take APU based notebook.. still under 25k.

Settled for a Toshiba laptop with 1 TB ...got a good deal on flipkart...just that movies have been taking lot of space along with photographs...now here's the thing...I have connected the laptop to the arcam avr using halide dac for two channel music using the stereo direct mode in the avr.... I think this is the best two channel music I have heard from my setup...also used the HDMI of the laptop connected to the AVR600 to watch movies...very satisfying...which brings up this question whether I should retire my blueray player Oppo 93 ? Don't want to do anything in haste hence some advice would help...thanks

Oppo BDP is said to have good DAC inside. You can compare both DACs. Then think of retirement.

Actually, that is a very interesting comparison. While Oppo obviously enjoys a good reputation, Halide is intriguing - the reviews I have read have been stellar.

Vsg, what are your thoughts?

The two channel through HDMI ( I.e. Using the dac of Arcam) either through the oppo or the laptop sounds really nice...which I thought was the best it could provide but getting the Halide dac hd in the chain brought in a different dimension...the vocals improved a lot..I mean it's like a different level altogether...reminds of some of the tube amps...as for the Dac of oppo 93, I would prefer the Arcam dac (I.e. Thru HDMI) over it...but where the oppo scores is the video side of things where it's quite good...the higher version like oppo 95 or 105 seem to have better dac's...

now the strange bit is that I have been using the halide dac earlier as well through the previous laptop, while it sounded nice then but it didn't create this kind of impact...since then the location and the laptop have changed...so not sure what contributed to the change in sound signature...

Bottom line.. I am pretty much on the verge of moving from CD player for good...just that being old habit, wanted to be doubly sure before doing it...
