Philips HI Q international speakers

Dear alwayslogo,
As far I remember, these were Philips 8" dual cone drivers. As far as the sound goes, let me tell you that it was a pleasing kind of sound and did not go to either extreme of the spectrum.I'll say analogue kind of sound.
Regards.

Its still available as boston hi q speaker. The sound quality is lively. Vocals will sound true to life. Very dynamic midrange and clear highs. Its bass response is restricted and largely depends on cabinet. Very high sensitivity-93dB . Will make your neighbours knock your door.

I've grown up listening to Hi-Qs. They are dual cone full range 8 inch drivers, very sensitive. Pleasing on the ear and play excellently with low power amplifiers. They somehow had the ability to produce good imagery and music that was pleasing on the ear. They would often struggle when driven with bass. Highs are a bit glaring (at times Dad used to play them with their original plastic covers, on) but mid range was quite fluid. Having said all this, they will be easily beaten by modern book shelves. However, the nostalgia associated with the Hi-Qs in India, makes them highly desirable.

Yes!! you are right HW!!. I heard that "New BOSTON" 8" FR speakers are available at the price you mentioned. I read that they are clones of famous Philips 9710 FR speakers. One can make super TL speakers with these at the very reasonable price.

Can any "Knowledgeable" :lol:FMs share the details.

Hi Hemant,
I am looking for 3"-4" good quality but cheap speakers. Could you tell me where can I get Phillips or similar small full range drivers? I don't mind used once.

Regards
Sachin

HW!! I am quite curious about BOSTON FR speakers.

I have one brand new pair lying , also have another older ( 4-5 yrs old) Philips pair ..

Also 2 pais of big bookshelf boxes which is NOS - fronr cover is in damaged condition though. ( planning to sell 1 NOS BOX Philips speakers)

thanks HW!! I hope cost for me also 0...

Anyway i have plenty of drivers, which I need to sort.

I am interested in Boston dealers and manufacturers details.

Boston has a website- Search for DNM SOUND SOLUTIONS INDIA. They have a wide range of drivers. I got a pair in chennai ritchie street for 700 INR. I have paired it with linuxguru's miniref. Believe me, this is the most wonderful system i ever had. This dual cone hi q will usually have a shouty midrange AKA whizzer shout When paired with usual amps. But, this kind of high Sensitive speakers give a flat response when paired with current driven amplifiers like miniref, myref and the like.
I use a diy 8 Inch sub powered by tda7294. The hi q takes care of mids and highs.AURAL ECSTASY!!! I felt for the first time the beauty of crossoverless single fullranger acoustics.

I humbly suggest anybody who is interested in fullrangers should give this one a try.

I had one and sold it to a fellow fm. It sounded sweet when connected to my Akai amp.

Hemant,
Will definitely post a detailed build thread with pictures. In short, I used the miniref as a normal stereo amplifier with left and right channels using hi q. Since I had a sub, the hi q should work as a sat only.Hence i chose a normal off the shelf 8 Inch speaker box and heavily stuffed with polyfill. The sub woofer filter is modified from a chinese hometheatre . I used the built in sub woofer filtersection but added Tda7294 And seperate trafo . The sub is dainty 8inch in a ported enclosure.

Miniref is a amplifier designed by linuxguru .He sells kits for these amplifiers. Search in diyaudio for miniref for further details. Its a wonderful amp with great musicality.

hi q should work with 2w amp. With 93dB sens, it should be ideal in a small listening room, say 15*15 ft.

I have started a seperate thread on miniref assembling. Will update pictures and build very soon.
