Pro-Ject DAC Box S FL is a Filter less, Non-Oversampling DAC with 4 of the TDA 1543 Chips working in parallel operating mode. It isn't supposed to play DSD.
It does not play DSD (just produces noise), if I send DSD over PCM; which is expected. Surprisingly, it is playing fine if I send DSD direct. I am using Raspberry Pi3 running Volumio, with Allo Digione to the DAC (i2s) over coaxial cable. Not sure which one in this chain is doing the conversion to PCM. Volumio shows 1bit DSD, and all the conversion, volume, re-sampling features are set to OFF. Allo Digione is not supposed to work with DSD, so Volumio may be forcing a conversion.
Hoping some experts could help decipher this behavior. This isn't really a problem, but would be good to understand.
