Please help me understand if it is ok to use a projector for regular TV use (6-7 hours each day). It would be used by my family and I may use it to watch movies once in a while.

The room gets ample amount of light too.

In a single word NO ( IMHO)

By the way my wife is an Architect and into corporate architecture and does a good amount of Boardrooms.

Now in last 2-3 years in almost ALL the boardroom LED/LCD'sd were installed , she does NOT remember where any projector is fitted.

talk about practicality !!

Though today's projectors are capable of throwing a good picture in reasonable ambient light, this will depend upon the lamp hours. With your planned usage, a lamp will last just for a couple of years. Lamps are expensive running to several thousand rupees. A regular LCD/LED TV would be better and much more convenient.

A pj will need equipment for sound. What would you plan for this? Would your family members be agreeable to switch on a separate component? It will also need a screen.
What is your room size and viewing distance? What size of picture are you looking to get? SD channels will look bad if the picture size is too large.

I would suggest you check out projectors in a well lit room at a dealer's place. Do check with SD channels.

Thank you for the reply, viewing distance will be 8-10 ft.... Sound will route via the AVR setup. Family can be convinced if it looks practical... :)

We watch TV regularly on our 106" screen everyday for about 2-3 hours in the evening(viewing distance about 12'). HD channels looks stunning while SD channels looks terrible. Also the strain on the eyes might be more if projector is used regularly for about 6-7 hours, so think from this health issue also. In my opinion, use TV for normal usage and projector for watching HD movies / National Geography HD prog / sports/ etc. That way you shall be increasing the proj lamp life also. More usage of the projector means more frequent cleaning of proj dust filters, etc.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
