Hi
Friends
There was a time when songs were released on various formats ,vinyls, cassettes and CDs in Bengal during Durga puja. Then renowned artists like Hemanta Mukherjee, kishore Kumar, Lata Manghesker, Asha Bhonsle ,and many more sang songs . The vinyls were sold prior to puja and people here collected those. In different community pujas in Kolkata and in the suburbs those songs were played round the clock. Those days the HMV used to release the lyrics of those songs recorded in a magazine entitled SHAROD ARGHYA and educated people bought it. Later, cassettes and CDs were released in 90's .After the demise of the legendary artists the then young generation also carried the baton of their predecessors. I had heard that once Lataji recorded a song and the music was created by Kishore Kumar for puja and that particular vinyl was liked by all. Rahul Dev Burman also made puja songs and people received all the songs happily. I can remember those puja numbers being played at different community pujas when I was a child and was going to my ancestral house to attend Durga puja which has been going on for 300 years. But these days songs made specially for puja can't be heard. Even don't know whether any song is made now for puja as it happened in past. On the auspicious day of MAHAASTHAMI I am writing this and hope prosperity and happiness for all the members of HFV .

Thanks, Bhaskar :) Please share few songs you liked. There is this song sung by Kishore Kumar "Amar Deep Nebhano Raat" which is one of my favorites. Was this song part of the albums released during the festival?

One of my favourite puja albums while growing up was(and still is) 'Sagarika' by Amit Kumar. I remember searching for this CD through the entire city of joy and finding it in a nondescript shop in Nager Bazar. This was the first ever CD brought by me with money earned through giving tuitions! I used to play it in my PC. I still have the CD.
And of course there should always be the mention of 'Priyotoma Mone Rekho' by Kumar Sanu. Someone growing up in the nineties always feel nostalgic by this very lyrics and tunes. There was Nachiketa. Further back, the Asha - Pancham combo produced some gems which still turns back the clock!
For the last three days, I am hearing some 'new-age' songs(courtesy the loudspeakers)which all sound similar to me. And yes, there is DJ music which is more like noise to ears who has had familiarity with melodies from 80s and 90s.
Pujor gaan is not something which is logical to record companies nowadays. In this age of instant downloads, it's unlikely they would recover the money spent. Also tastes of younger generation has changed as compared to those 2 or 3 decades back. I mean those days of audio cassettes.

Hi
Sandeepda
Searched on line and came to know that that particular song was released on January 1970 .So it is not part of the albums released during the puja. But kishore Kumar sang for puja and people waited for his albums. As regards my favourite Bengali songs I shall share shortly.

Bhaskar
