Wanted to share my solution for a low cost media player as a source for my DAC. Normally I use my DVD player as a source for my Schitt bifrost multibit DAC but wanted to have a media player easy to control using my iPhone as a remote to use occasionally. While I was looking for a reasonably priced solution, it suddenly occurred to me to use my raspberry pi3 using the USB output. Quickly installed OSMC on a SD card, configured the audio output to USB, changed the maximum sampling rate to 192 kbps and was able to play flac files off a USB drive. I could control the pi3 using the Sybu Kodi app on my iPhone.I was also able to connect the Pi3 to a stream magic USB input as well. Other USB DACs may work as well. One thing I noticed was that even playing 192 Kbps files, the stream magic display showed only 96 Kbps. Dont know why and where the downsampling was happening. Overall it was a pretty stable and inexpensive solution. If any of the forum members use the Pi3 as a audio source, would like to hear about their experience.
Thanks

with regard to your post717255, Sorry I dont think I am able to help much but anyway here's my 2 cents:

1. I used my raspberry pi with a mobile charger and I didnt face any issues. Note that the quality of the micro USB cable can be important.

2. I didnt use Wi-FI and I played off a USB stick so I cant really say

3. bug head player does a lot of signal processing while the raspberry pi dosent do much (or maybe not at all barring some sample rate conversion), so I dont think its a fair comparison

Hi zeta148,

Good to bump into more pi3-media player users.

After a long search for my kind of setup which is only available as a bluenode costing the earth, i came across volumio which actually led me into the world of R pi(3) and got me hooked.

I ended up getting myself an "allo piano 2.1 dac". With stereo sub out [emoji48].

I tried rune audio/moode and volumio and stuck to volumio because only it worked without issues.

Waiting for my new router with usb to attach an ext hdd which should show up as a NAS device on Volumio.

My Setup :
> Volumio >>
>> Raspberry Pi 3 model B
>> Allo Piano 2.1 DAC
>> Norge 1000 Concerto Amp
>> Tannoy Eclipse 3 FS speakers

Sounds all right..!
