Rega Planar 2 cartridge

Hello folks

Loving the Rega Planar 2. Been using it since a while.

I use it through the phono stage of Rega Elex Mark IV

Need lead/recommendation for any easy to install cartridge upgrade.

Also, does cartridge upgrade elevate the sound considerably, assuming everything in the chain remains same.

Hi. Your Planar 2 has a Rega Carbon cartridge which is a rebadged Audio Technical AT 3600 ( not AT3600L, which is OE in many lower cost TTs and tracks at 2.5g+). Your cart tracks at approximately 2g. Now there are a few factors u have to consider while upgrading: 1. Is the cartridge height same as the extant cartridge? If not then you may have to fit spacers to increase the same. 2. The counterweight is designed for a specified weight range of cartridge, say from 5g to 8g. A heavier cart may require a heavier counterweight. 3. P2 has a medium mass arm (please confirm this) hence some hi compliance cartridges may not suit and this is a subject in itself requiring study. So before taking a decision do ask your friends and professionals and then finally go ahead.

A drop in replacement can be the rega exact and Elys carts. A lot of folks use Otofon with rega. As long as the cart has a tracking weight of 2 grams it will work. We can fit shims or spacers for any difference in heights.
