Can anyone suggest how to get a generic remote that works on an Onkyo 484 AVR?

Get a Logitech universal remote. They have codes for over 225,000 units an I am sure yours would also be included.

I can recommend the Logitech Harmony 525 remote....costs ~3.5k INR. The 525 can control 15 devices and like Venkat has mentioned, it is likely that the Logitech Remote has the codes for your AVR. Since you frequent US quite often, suggest you get one from there for lesser or a higher model for same price.
