I am in the process of gradually upgrading my audio setup and currently am running an HTS3400 with Front LR replaced by Sony Bookshelf speakers I got for free from my cousin.

I will go for Diamond 220 for the fronts, 220C center and a DFS pair for the surrounds. The AVR will be replaced by something like Yamaha RX V477 and a Sub not yet finalized.

Now I will buy the 220 LR first and 220C a few months after that and remaining about a year later. This means that the Diamond LCR will be driven by the HTS3400 AVR for about an year.

I want your valuable opinions on the following:
1) Is this the right upgrade path or should I go for the AVR first?(Major issues here are that the onkyo has a passive sub and so will need a sub immediately as well which makes things out of budget. I also think that I will get a more noticeable difference by upgrading speakers first)
2) Will the HTS3400 reciever be too weak to drive the diamond LCR and cause a) Very poor performance b) Get too strained and end up sending distorted signals to the speakers causing damage to the speakers? (People who have already upgraded HTS3400 speakers please provide feedback) This will be the setup for about an year.

Your on the right path, upgrading your speakers first will bring out the best from your Onkyo receiver.

Your Onkyo receiver will not have any problem driving the Diamond 200s. But the Wharfedale DFS is for more powerful receivers and it is also not the best match for the Diamond 200 series. For the surround speakers go for another pair of Diamond 220, it will be a perfect match for your front speakers.
