SONY had square drivers in their mini systems and boomboxes that they called APM.

National had the same that they called AFD. I have one of them and that little 4 inch cone creates such a good sound, I tried to restore it a bit (my bro had battered it to near death).

I was in a mall in Sharjah and came across this from SONY. A party speaker though.

First thought it was just a circular driver with a square hole on the baffle. No they are back with square speakers.

They are no different from regular drivers; they just have a square frame. Just like many manufacturers make drivers in rectangular and hex frames.
The old Sony "APM" and National Panasonic "AFD" drivers were totally different in tech and the only commonality with them is the shape of the outer frame.
