Hi,

I am looking for expert opinion(s) on speakers for my new Onkyo 626 ..

Usage 80% Movies 20% Music
Room Size about 250 sq.ft.
Budget ~35K

Options I have in my mind so far

1. Buy Jamo 360 series 5.1 or BA S 5.1 and later buy FS of Jamo/BA when budget permits
2. Buy Sonodyne 2605V3 and stretch a bit to get Center as well .. and later complete the setup when budget permits

Personally I have auditioned these speakers I have mentioned .. and am happy the way the sound .. BUT open for suggestions/recommendation

Please help me out here ..
Thanks in Advance

Well, I have a similar room size and had Onkyo satellite 5.1 package and then decided to upgrade.
So, auditioned a few bookshelf speakers and finally bought Polk Audio combination.
Fronts - RTiA3 - 25000
Center - CSiA6 - 25000
Sub - DSW-Pro 550wi - 27000

I yet have to upgrade the surrounds, but maybe later this year. As of now I'm preety satisfied.

As, your budget is 35K, I would recommed you to audition the Polks...
Fronts - RTiA1 - 19000
Center - CSiA4 - 16000

That makes it to 35k, and is great. The A1's are 125watts and the center is 200watts.

For 80% movie watching, i would suggest Sonodyne Avant range than Sonodye Sonus range...

Sat/BS + Sub combo will be better for movies than FS + Sub combo....

Thank You for your suggestions ..

Visited ProFx today .. and took audition for RTIA1 and A5 .. as well as TSx 220 and TSx440T .. they were all impressive based on their size/price .. He asked me to bring my AVR to hear them to take a call .. BUT with the setup he had .. I was impressed with TSx440T very much ..

Seems my budget is going to stretch :D ..

Will keep you folks posted

Thanks

Hi

If you are looking for decent speakers to last you for a while within a tight budget...you can perhaps look at the Boston Acoustic Soundware XS 5.1 satellite system within 24k....works better than BOSE....

Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS 5.1

There is a bookshelf type model available too....A2310HTS

Boston Acoustics A 2310HTS Home Theater Speaker Package

Later on you have the option to buy better speakers....

If you can stretch your budget...as much as possible visit all the possible Home Theatre dealers around you and prepare a list of shortlisted models where we can then perhaps guide you...heard that Polk audio is offering deep discounts on their existence in India...check with profx....

The most important thing to keep in mind is to ensure that the speakers impedance is same like the AVR...if not same.it should be higher....speakers with higher sensitivity will work well and put less strain on the AVR...it should be 86db and above....

The heart of any home theatre is the centre speaker and subwoofer....you need to ensure that you have the best ones here as they handle all the movies and concerts...the fronts and rears only provide support to the whole system.....end of the day it depends on what appeals to you and your wallet...make sure you read reviews and see videos posted over the internet to assist you in the final decision...

Hope this helps

hello Folks
I too have Onkyo TX NR 616 and want to know a good set of speakers for my setup. I am a complete novice in this area and pardon me for writing silly things.

Two things I noted from your posts here.
1) @saketb you say here and some other thread, that there are good discounts from Polk Audio. do you know how long are the discounts available and by how much % age?

2) @efernand1 mentioned 2 things a) speakers impedance is same like the AVR. what about matching the wattage as well? higher than AVR or same or lesser? and b) heart of any home theatre is the centre speaker and subwoofer. for a budget of around 75K, which center speaker and subwoofer (brand and model) would you recommend?

3) i have a question. how does floor standing speakers feel / hear different than say bookshelf ( I am sure they are better but they ought to be front speakers, right?). Would buying floorstanding speakers mean can compromise on cost of center speaker or eliminate that completely?

4) another question: having a 7.2 AVR, If i connect only 3 or 5 channels and a subwoofer, would it work?

Hi cs rajesh

With the budget of 75k I am sure you can get a decent set of speakers...the question is which AVR you are using? Although being a 7.2 you may want to use 5.1 and perhaps use the remaining 2 channels as Fronts (B). This answers your question 4

Once you provide us the brand and model, we can check the specs and recommend some good speakers....this answers question 2

The centre and subwoofer play an important role for a Home Theatre as most of the output in terms of dialogue and action noise is delivered by them. The fronts and rears in a movie steup would provide the acoustic surround support and effects......

Floor Standing speakers would have a better range of Operating frequency example 30hz / 45hz till 22khz and thus in some cases eliminates the need of powered subwoofers...

Bookshelf speakers on the other hand have frequencies from 45hz - 20khz and it depends and varies from brand to brand....this addresses question 3

Provide your AVR details....

Hi,

I ordered RTIA1 CSIA4 and PSW110 from ProFx .. and after too much of bargaining .. he gave 20% .. though I got along with one more person ( whom I met of forum .. so thanks to forum for the same ) ..

They said yesterday was the last day .. but I think they will do it even tomorrow .. you can give it a try ..

And yes .. though its 7.2 .. you can use it in anything less than 7.2 ..

Thanks

Hi
thats really sad that they are not providing 20% discount. If this is anniversary discount then this must run at least for a few months.

regards
Rajesh C

Hi Rajesh,

This could be just a marketing gimmick that they would have used to sell it to us .. But as I said .. you may be able to the same discount if you try ..
Thanks

Hi cs rajesh

apologies I missed seeing the model details...well your AVR is having a decent output of 165w RMS @ 6 ohms load and so you can add good powerful speakers to get the best experience....

Wharfedale has a good set which seems to be within your budget..... you may get it cheaper elsewhere and that's where you need to check....

Wharfedale Obsidian 600 Home Theatre Package

These speakers are rates at 6 ohms load and would driver well to provide decent output across all frequencies.....This is without subwoofer...

Boston Acoustics also has a good set...

Boston Acoustics A 360 Home Theatre Package

You can eliminate purchasing the subwoofer for now if you are going for floor standing speakers....that is if there is an issue to increase your budget......

Like these there are other speaker packages available....you can do a mix and match and purchase the best....Polks RTi A7s are pretty decent as Floor Standers....

Some of the best powered sub woofers is Velodyne Impact 12 or SVS or Definitive Technology....these are pricey and start from 30k onwards....

What you need to ensure is that the speakers you purchase are rated at 6 ohms or higher and have a sensitivity value of 88db and above....this will ensure proper matching load...in terms of watts RMS output each speaker should be atleast 80-100 w RMS...This will help you to increase the volume to the maximum possible levels to enjoy crisp clear music or movies experience....

There are a lot of speakers available....you should audition as many as you can and decide as per your liking and budget.....go through online reviews and videos to understand performance and feedback...

Hope this helps...

this helps a lot.

I like both packages and they look comprehensive and within budget, compared the prices with Amazon US and they are competitive. But they are both out of stock on hifimart.

You say, i better audition as much as i can, Can you recommend stores (in bangalore, if u know), dealers (along with other brands) other than Hifimart and Profx?

I am thinking for floor standing speakers without subwoofer to be within budget.

Further, I am not an audiophile and I find it hard to recognise subtle differences and so i would have to take help of expert audiophile friend for auditioning. I know its hard, but is there any advice on how to be sensitive and critical during auditions? :D
