Hi Friends

I got a strange call yesterday from TataSky (I had got a Tatasky HD+ installed 4-5 days ago).

Lady: Sir, Do you have internet and is yours 'Cable or Wifi'?
Me: Sorry why does Tata need to know this...are you selling me a connection?
Lady: No we are not selling you an internet connection...so Cable or Wifi?
Me: (after thinking how to respond since I have 2 wifi routers and 7-8 ethernet points around the house)...ok I have Wifi. why do you ask?
Lady: Did the person who came to install, give you a 'blue' cable?
Me: No, there was an black HDMI cable in the box, which he did'nt use as my wiring was already done, by he did hand it over to me. Again, why do you ask?
Lady: It is for internet download from TataSky
Me: What is this?
Lady: you can download songs (something like that)
Me: OK....So is it activated now, shall I plug a cable now...?
Lady: No this will be activated on Oct

She had no clear idea of what this service was....

Has anyone heard of this Tatasky Download.... I havn't yet tried connecting the network to the tatasky box....

Thoughts?

Thanks

I feel they are pissed of with firmware download (hidden) channel over satellite. Which always kept some bandwidth occupied. I saw technician used some key combination for upgrading firmware of my new STB instantly. For other than scheduled firmware upgrade they might plan to use internet based server. This may free up some bandwidth for them and quality of existing channel can improve.

I hope they are not moving to IPTV.

This is good information. I too switched to a Sky+ box some weeks back. Will check with the install franchisee for the 'Blue cable' and firmware upgrade.

What will happen to our limited data plan internet connections? FUP in 2 days I guess. ;)

This seems like a new angle. Makes some sense though.
But really, how much bandwidth can be taken by these OTA firmware updates. ( which anyways, happen every 3months or so )

I recently upgraded another box to HD+ and was told that they update the firmware now at the shop itself since that shaves off 20-30 mins off their installation time.

For you it may be one time. But whenever new customer joins, after installation they upgrade the firmware to latest one available over satellite link. From System information I guess they are constantly transmitting data blocks of firmware in sequence (continuously). Whenever your STB starts download it gets to next available block and catches missed block in next cycle. After gathered all blocks, download completed and installation is done. So that transmission is always there available for 24x7 usage.
This bandwidth will be freed if upgrade is done through Ethernet port with the help of laptop/source server (small like media player).

Do you still have the phone number? I think I got a call like that, too. But it wasn't a live person talking. I think what I got was a recording. I called my telephone company about it and got the phone number blocked.

I also reported the phone number to the consumer complaint site Report Phone Number to CallerCenter.com to warn everyone else. I suggest you you do the same.
