To help gain an understanding of how we form belief systems, have a read of the article "The Belief Engine". It is a fascinating look into the way our minds work, and helps to explain how we can perceive very obvious differences that don't actually exist. Not for the faint heart.

It is more of a general article. May be if someone can write a HIFI edition of this that would be truly good, may be with some real trials (audition trials ) over distribution of subjects (ages, listening prefs, etc) and source tracks along with actual measurement of differences

Good article.
Kind of voices what I have come to as a conclusion after meeting / talking / analyzing people and their beliefs. (Religion and God included)

There is one more reason that fires the belief engine that is not covered there:
Social acceptability.

A lot many people believe in certain things not because their mind has played tricks on itself, but because someone in authority or someone in fraternity/relation believes so.

Fear of getting ousted from or fear of disturbing the hitherto comfortable relationship status quo also leads to creation of beliefs imported from someone else. (Herd mentality?)
