Judging by the popularity of Quads here, couldn't have done away without a club really ! Quad owners unite !

Only condition to be in the club, you have to post at least one pic of your beloved Quads !

Just post on the thread with model number and pic, and you'll be added. Also, if you have any of their amps or other equipment feel free to post. ;)

Here's one from me of my Quad 11L2:

not a very good hunter :)
ebay us/ uk may be a place but I am not too sure if I will get a lemon - and then returning it would be too costly. Even if everything goes smooth, shipping to India may be too expensive. Help needed and appreciated. I will request Sid to give a demo with his 909.
The setup today was sounding quite nice with my hk amp - not sure if it is the return of lyrita pre or just me listening with more attention.

@sid - I was very close to janakpuri on fri but didn't have your number. Called malvai but he said you were away. Anyways, I hope to invite you to my house some weekend. Not very sure about the coming weekend - it may be too busy.

Hi QuadLovers,

Perhaps some of you would have heard of Quad Musikwiedergabe in Germany HOME
Quad Musikwiedergabe is the only company that can repair and/or refurbish older Quad ESLs such as ESL57 and ESL63 because they have bought over all machines and tools from Quad at the time they closed down operation and then sold the company to present owner. So if anyone is facing problems by burnt foils or crackling sound, which is due to slack ESL foils, from their speakers you can just contact me. I have an agreement with QUAD Musikwiedergabe to handle the packing, shipping etc. to Germany and re-import to India. Also older amplifiers starting from tube amps up to the 600-series can be repaired and refurbished by them. If you require any more information just contact me by PN.

Best regards,
Jochen Semler

I think this cooling mod is worth a try. Then paint the fridges to match wall paint, or house the amp in the fridge, with fridge housed in great polished wooden housing :yahoo:

my kabAAdiwaala (I don't play kaBBaddi with him) doesn't have these amps and I have no money to buy them new. If you can get me those amps I am sure I will get fridge/ wood enclosures made. Even with the threat of being thrown out of house :yahoo:

GREAT!! care to have the 1st go at it ?? :ohyeah:

BTW - you should be looking at the fridgewallas now to get the appropriate size. Maybe that kabbadiwalla of yours can come handy?

actually - another thought - like your split ac, why not keep the amps out of the room and just get cables in/ out  You can build an enclosure outside your room. This is what I think they call out of room (box) thinking!

@ Sid Trehan :

Welcome back to an ALL Quad Setup - i.e. 99Pre | 909 | 11L2
Yes chief, ears seem to be too addicted to the Quad's signature hence not really ready to accept the change.

Good to note that the sleeping 99Pre is back into the circuit after it killed off the Lyrita Passive Pre! Nevertheless, its not the end of the Passive world and seems I've gotta loan you my one for a cpl of hours to prove my point.
Sir, thanks so much, very sweet of you but no loaning ..my ears cant hear loaned or lended. Has to me mine. You know what i mean.

Till then - enjoy the setup, your new TT acquisition and do post the pictures Mr. Photographer (you take wonderful pictures I know :) ) so that our < alcy > can enroll you to the club!

Yes sir. The woodwork in the bedroom shall finish by tomm, then shall lend ears to the new possession and thereon pics shall come. Thanks for the kind words on photography sir. I shall love to see the b/w shots on M8.

As for the Quad club, i remain at mercy of Mr. Alcy. ;)

Wishes n regards

@ Sid Trehan : we also await a Full report on the merits / demerits of the Lyrita Passive Pre straight from the horse's mouth and hope you'll make that posting soon on another separate Thread.

regards!

Sure sir, I shall discuss my feelers from the sound differences i noticed. I shall listen more till the weekend.

@a_e: Bro! I was at Sid's place yesterday. Hear the Lyrita Passive pre for over an hour! And it was not my cuppa tea... It really opens out the high frequencies and the Bass was completely absent. There was no warmth in the sound and the soundstage never 'materialised'.

While Katie Melua sounded like herself, the overall dynamics just wern't there... On her "Shy Boy" track, the smoky feel just wasn't there... On "9 million bicycles..." The flute was biting the ear....

While all this was happening, I was also observing sid, Katie failed to catch his attention (I was introducing katie to him, for the first time!).

However, when I did persuade him to put up the quad 99, and played the very same tracks, the boy had a beautific smile on his lips! Katie finally seduced him!

I'd say the quad 99 is a fine pre-amp. It even allowed a fairly good soundstage for the Project TT that we hooked up to it!

now my question to a_e: Dude, i'm kinda off the passive pre notion altogether. In fact, what I heard was enuff to put me off passive pre-amps for life...

Despite this, I'd like to take you on on your offer to try your passive pre... purely because you've been spot on on all your recommendations till now...

@Sid, bro, keep the quad pre. It rocks!

Hi,

I have a pair of the Quad II/II and the Quad QC22 pre.

The QuadII/II amps have been restored using Black GATE power supply caps(SKZ) and PIO coupling caps. The QC 22 is not being used, its in storage.

I use a passive pre or a Hafler DH 101 with the Quad II/II amps .
The Hafler is a SS pre but paired with the Quad II/II makes beautiful music.

Ken Kessler suggested this combination, and I have to say that he was right. An unlikley pairing but works very well.

This is an old picture.

There is a Quad Yahoo groups, and a Quad amp group on reveiw 33.

Hi,

Using a passive attenuation device requires that you optimise electrical "energy transfer" parametres (between pre & amp)

1) The output impedance of the pre and the input of the amp are important.

2) The source component (i.e. whatever precedes the "passive" pre) will be driving: wire-> volume control (passive pre)->wire->amp. So it must have a strong output.

3) Softened bass is usually the sign that insufficient energy is entering the amp -- it has to do with the source, the impedances of the amp & the attenuation device (passive pre).

The input impedence of the 909 is 20K.What are the impedences of the passive pre and source?

Rajiv
