Sometimes life hits the rewind button and we are transported back to the good old times!

While cleaning up the storage I had to take out our beloved old music system that has given us countless hours of music enjoyment to the fullest! I took out the Philips powerhouse a couple of days back to clear up the storage space and there it was lying in the living room for last 2 days.

I got some free time today and I have been thinking of having a bedroom system recently. So I thought let me just turn it on! :)

Turning on was a breeze. Just connected the Philips speakers to the system and good to go! (no need to turn on 10 different components in the chain! Just one Power button and good to sing! Sweet! Life is this simple!)

I connected the speakers using simple speaker cables.

These speakers have been moded by my dad. (Yes he is the reason for my family being into music! :) ) The drivers had been upgraded. They seem to be around 7-8 inch mid-range driver with a tweeter.

I connected the headphone out of my laptop to one of the input and pressed the Power button!

I have kept the equalizer exactly how I used to :D The V shape!

Note the radium stickers on the button and knobs those have been put my me! :) We always used to turn off the lights and could not locate the buttons. Then I had a "brilliant" idea ;) and put radium cutouts on the buttons and that did the trick. :)

I am right now listening to the system playing!!!! :DDDDD

It is a beautiful feeling! The sound is nice and warm with a nice full bodied sound. Started listening to Colonial cousins (our favourite album on this system!) - "Feel Alright" .It is playing right now.
The sound is full bodied and the midrange is good. Nice and warm sound...
Adjusting the equalizer how I want it to sound... Man isnt this so awesome! I can tweak the sound how I want.. without all those crappy audiophile fears/principles and rules! :D :D :D (pun intended)

But really it is sounding really fabulous. The music is very warm and inviting. And I have not even used any high quality source (mp3), cables (normal speaker cables), DAC (the laptop headphone out), speaker positioning (it is just kept on my table).. But the sound has encapsulated the entire room and is very inviting and soothing...

So now I will continue enjoying this completely satisfying and heart warming sound while you can feast on the pics.. :)

While "Feel Alright..." plays on.. and yes I am feeling perfectly alright and liberated.. :)

I used to keep the equalizers in exactly the same position

Still having my Philips system... it was 80 wats pmpo lol... listened to it for a long time

I am actually right now trying to play Diana Krall - "Temptation" (Jazz) in FLAC and I am really SHOCKED! and not believing what I am hearing!! The mid range is really rich and the vocals are really sweet and full bodies and the high are also clean!

Tried playing another track - Chandani Raatein and believe me the sound is amazing! Even keeping my low expectations in mind this is still really really good sound and definitely above MidFi. It is 100% better than the starting audiophile speakers we get these days for sure!! I guess the midrange drivers are doing the trick! The vocals are really bloomy and sweet with excellent highs...

I am gonna ask my dad what driver we have used! I can only imagine with further tweaking the sound will just improve..

Well.. it is really like breaking the ice and just enjoying the music without all the preconceived notions.. It is very liberating to say the least... :D

I see many happy hours of listening ahead of me... Cheers!

 Time for you to sell your 'audiophile' gears eh???

Return to innocence
Enigma - Return To Innocence - YouTube

This definitely gives me something my HiFi gear can only dream of! and that is Unconditional Satisfaction! haha .. :D

I so badly want to go back to that time... that day... NOW!

So so true "Innocent" times those were.... and the good life...

After many days.. no months.. no years.. I am LISTENING to music rather than ANALYZING the system playing the music!

I have hit Musical "Moksha"! hahah

life used to be so simple back then, i had a BPL CWX79 powerhouse back then.

< = >

Less in More.. :)

This also has a headphone out! :yahoo: I have plugged in my Fostex TR50P headphone to the headphone out and the same sweet goodness! :clapping:
Happily playing Roop Kumar Rathod.. "Khamosh Raat". Pairs well with the headphones. (Nice vocals/highs and good bass) Usually the Fostex sound bit dry (as they have flat response due to studio purpose) but with this they are sounding very complete and well rounded.

Really begs to be asked whether systems then were made with a genuine interest in reproducing good music as compared to today's marketing gimmics!

Reminds me of the days when I made my own speakers with Bolton drivers and connected them to a pioneer midi hifi system. It used to come with a direct drive lp player too.

Many parties in the college days revolved around this centre piece !!

You may connect your turntable via a phonostage, and you will like the sound even more....

This systems sound warm and hide all the clicks an pop's of the turntable surface noise very well

I had the same PowerHouse system from Philips.

Even when I stopped listening to tapes I converted it into a mini system for my sister... connected a Sony CDP via AUX and she used it for a couple of years.

Finally, I gave it to my cousins for use as a makeshift home theater... connected to a DVDP, CPD, etc. I believe they are still using it... at least the speakers and the amplifier parts.

Lovely. I had the same model back in those days. I'm sure this will be quite nostalgic :).

And yes, I used the same V configuration for the equalizer. In-fact that's how I used to set all equalizers for a very long time.

Ya, this system used to be a very good one by then standards. We also had a floor stander DIYed by my dad which we still have and it used to drive it very well with excellent HiFi sound!

Ya, this system sounds at its best with the V configuration. I tried setting it flat but the V configuration gives the best balanced sound.

Yes these are workhorses and just keep playing with not much fiddling and maintenance required!

Yes, this gives nice and warm sound. Even bad quality mp3 files (128kbps) which I cant stand otherwise play on very well and the sound is analog like. The mp3s are very enjoyable!
In fact I had plugged in my Fostex heaphones and was happily listening till 1 PM last night and wanted to go on listening.. What I noticed is the sound is very very sweet and warm and can be listened to for hours without any trace of listening fatigue.

Cheers!

Its really funny that most of us with seemingly (and realistically) more advanced equipment on our current rigs, drool over these basic rigs of the past. The fact is there's a lot more to an enjoyable music listening experience than the SQ and the rig. Its something more emotional, a bigger bond.

Absolutely dear!

When there is Nothing to Loose we cross over and submit ourselves and become a part of the natural flow... THAT my friends is very liberating!

Now I am convinced that in the "rat race" for better sound and the self-proclaimed "audiophile" title, the heart of the music is getting left behind somewhere and lost. Will make a conscious effort to do justice to the music being played back by giving unconditional attention and enjoying it to the fullest no matter what. :) After all a child enjoys a lullaby no matter how out of tune it may be, a mother need not be a trained singer for that. Just validates the fact that music listening experience is lot more that SQ and the rig but it is something more emotional and a bigger bond.

Hmm.. this is a nice point in the musical journey to just pause, introspect, ponder and appreciate unconditionally..

I have seen power house with full range dual cone speakers but not a woofer. The speaker looks really good and well maintained.

That brings up another point. How come the common man systems of yester years sound so good to ears? Is it because the designers of circuit/speakers thought more about the listeners rather than one upmanship on exotic materials/circuits or on technical excellence based on numbers/measurements of today? How come the mid range vocals of even some of the mid priced audio gear of today does not sound warm, rich and as complete as these common gear like Philips? Why for the speakers of today our ears have to adjust i.e. warm or neutral or bright sounding instead of other way around i.e good sounding speakers for our ears? I am not discounting that people have their own preferences but the ease with which we ENJOYED the music instead of splitting our head with all sorts of permutation of equipments to arrive at the magical sound quality which would ALLOW US TO ENJOY MUSIC has lead me to these rambling thoughts.
