Hi,

I am getting a Sony Bravia Quad Theater + Sony SW3 wireless subwoofer at 150k INR in a deal in India. I already have a Sony Bravia A80L OLED and mainly watch movies and shows.

I do have a modest HT setup of Marantz NR 1609 receiver with Tannoy Mercury 7C (centre), Pioneer BS22 LR, Onkyo SKS-HT648 surround speakers and an old Onkyo SL 150 subwoofer. I am not entirely satisfied with the setup because if feels like a hit and miss even after Marantz calibration.

1. Need your kind advice on if it is a good deal to upgrade to the Sony.
2. Need your kind advice on how to upgrade the current speakers (LR+C) with a budget of around 50-100k.

Thanks,
Niranjan

Hi Niranjan, did you got the Quad for you HT setup ?

While Sony home theater speaker systems can be decent for casual use, they often lean toward a more boomy, party-style sound signature — heavy on bass and excitement but lacking the detail, clarity, and separation needed for a true cinematic experience.

If you’re serious about building a real home theater, I highly recommend starting with a quality pair of bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer from reputable brands. Look into something like:
  • SVS Prime Bookshelf + SB1000 Pro Sub
  • Focal Chora 806 or Vestia series + sub
  • Emotiva B1+ Bookshelf + Emotiva sub

These will offer far superior imaging, dialogue clarity, and dynamics, giving you a much more immersive and accurate theater experience. You can always expand later into a full 5.1 or 7.1 setup — but starting with quality core components makes all the difference.

I use Quad with SW5, dont take SW3, its good and can sound as close to dedicated home theatre. Worth the money. for smaller rooms only like 12*16.

If you already have a receiver and cabling, you would be downgrading by shifting to the Quad theater.

@shyam is right. The SVS Prime Bookshelves + SB1000 (not even Pro) Sub will beat that sony handsomely. Your biggest weakness in your setup is your sub, that is just not enough for a cinema feel. Next weakness is your LCR - the center isn't that bad to be fair.

Changing your LCR + Sub (most important) will impact it massively.

Cheaper option:
Elac Debut 5.2 or 5.3 LCR for ~60-70k (very very good value)
SVS SB 100 for 70-80k

That is 130k. Shift your Pioneers to surrounds. Sell the Tannoy/Onkyo speakers/subs.
And you have soooo much more thump and quality than that Sony setup.

I own the sw5 and quad theatre.
It's more of a lifestyle product than a true hoemetheatre. It's best suited where space is a challenge. I won't chose it for a dedicated home cinema room. Its more suited for bedroom usage.
