You cannot do that as almost all the STB's provided by the providers are encrypted. So whatever you record can be played out on those STB's only. Even recording of one STB to playing on another STB is also not possible as everybody has there own standard encryption.

First things first - It is illegal to copy the transmission onto your own storage device. And the encryption mechanism built into the chip won't allow you watch those ripped files on any other device. Believe me you will be wasting time attempting this.

+1 to this and hence should be avoided. However just for the sake of discussion in my opinion if I have to record the PS3 Game playback playing on my TV then I will put one HDMI splitter to allow PS3 output to go to TV and Capture card of my PC (if I had one) like this one HD Video Capture Card - PCI Express HDMI, DVI, VGA, and Component HD Capture Card | StarTech.com

@manniraj, the encryption is in the source signal which is over the wire connecting Dish antenna on rooftop to STB input. However the HDMI out from STB is not encrypted or else the TV would never understand that.

Agree that the encryption is at the source signal itself but when you record over the USB port of the STB its encrypted by the STB before copying the data on the pendrive or HDD right. But recording over the HDMI will defeat the purpose of the recording that can be done over the STB itself. Not sure whether you can do the scheduled/programmed recording over the HDMI card that you posted the link in the above post.

HI Folks: many thanks for the responses and not sure if my question was rightly understood (except for baijuxavior).

The HD STB does legally provide recording over USB (once you subscribe for the feature and pay required fee etc.) which is known to be locked to that STB only. We can connect a USB HDD and record to watch later.

Now the question is if anyone tried recording to a NAS storage - either thru USB or ethernet. I see VD2H HD STBs have both USB & ethernet ports.

As far as I know the recording can be done using a USB port only and not the ethernet port. I believe the LAN port might be enabled in the future similar to the DishTV enabling it for the USB port last year even though the port was available since more than 2 years.
Not sure how the NAS storage connected over USB works as I think they might be formatting the HDD for recording on the STB. Also when you say NAS the copying happens from an external HDD connected to the NAS but in your case you are expecting the STB to recognize that the NAS is like a USB storage.

Thanks for the reply manniraj. yes, am exploring if the STB recognizes NAS as a USB drive to record. But if it attempts to format - would defeat the purpose.

Will wait if any FM tried this option successfully! :)
