Hello guys, i am creating this thred on behalf of my friend who is interested in buying vu tv. He is confused between buying the 50 inch full hd led and the 50 inch iconium series 4k.

The reason for this confusion is that 90% of his movies are downloaded 1080p content which he wishes to play using the tv usb since he doesnt own any bluray or hd media player. So the tv should support all kind of codecs including the recent hevc (not necessarily 4k, just the hevc encoded mkvs).

And the second reason is that he wants 5.1 surround passthrough from the tv to his yht 196 home theater receiver for the movies that he would play using the tv usb.

Now whether i know for sure that the 4k iconium series has optical out, i dont know whether its capable of 5.1 passthrough to the reviever. And on the other hand i dont know whether the 1080p model has any optical out at all or not. On the specs its written "spdif audio out to play external speaker system".

So long story short, on the basis of usb playback support and 5.1 passthrough which tv should i recommend to my friend? Difference between the 50inch 1080p and 4k is around 14k. Thanks in advance.

i think your friend should go with 1080p version as it is saving 14 k . i know a 50 inch tv deserves 4 k resolution. if budget is not the problem then go for 1080 p version, it is 200% worthy and recommendable.

50inch 4k. This model has hevc support so he will be able to play hevc x265 videos using usb. Also it has hdmi with arc so receiver support is also there.

I know the support is there but have doubts since there's no way we can go and physically check the models ourselves, kinda blindly have to go for it. So can any 4kvu tv user confirm the surround passthrough doubt please?
