Wharfedale 9.5 with Denon 1611 - Volume levels

Hi all,
I am also using somewhat a similar set up - Denon 2310 with 9.5 fronts,9cs, 4 nos DFS ( for 7.1) and SW 150. Quite happy with the system. Amp I have upgraded from ONKYO SR 505. After changing the receiver, sound quality literally increased like anything.Perhaps the speakers need more power!!!!

Also one can further increase the volume by increasing the INPUT SOURCE LEVEL ( Menu-manual setting-input-source level) in the Denon.

Well,
9.1 is again a bookshelf. My intention is to get floorstanders thats why 9.5s. but going by the advises herein, i think i have to make more savings to buy some jumbo receiver to crank them! Well i heard somewhere (may be sridhar) refered that his 1611 is doing well with 9.5s. I dont know im so confused.

Hi Bluescorp,

I have the 1611 and 9.5 combo and the set up is doing fine and am very happy with it.
Make sure you setup the receiver using the Audyssey. Audyssey makes a huge difference.

IMHO and also reading some posts on receiver selection, you need to only go for the higher end receivers if you need more features(7.1, multizone, ipod input, etc). As you can see from my earlier post, the extra power of 15W that 1911 can give you, will not necessarily mean an increase in volume level. I think we need to look at receivers w.r.t what features we need - and 1611 more than satisfied my needs.

Thx Sri
Couldnt have agreed more!

Infact i deed an audition yeaterday of the following with 1611 my observations:

1. Denon 1611: nice melodious and punchy powerpacked receiver. Was able to play fluently the 9.6 at about -16 vol level.

2. wharf 9.6: very boomy low in clarity but good for low and midranges and may make your sub abit redundant at high vol.

3. wharf 9.2: nice melodious speakers with good bass but was lacking the highs

4. wharf 9.1: amazing clarity! with less bass though, but added the polk sub 110 and the combo played very well.

the 9.5's was not available for audition. Will be checking them next week with 10.1.

5. polk sub 110: very punchy andtight bass.

So far so good. One thing, i dont see denon 1611 with any volume issues with wharfe speakers (since they were playing 9.6 smoothly). However i will play them with 9.5. But some how liked the 9.1's very well.

Also i played only music and not movies. Will my impression change in movies?

And yes, the Polks speakers are very bright and noisy. Dint like them at all.

So may be i will go for movies next time. Now it will be show down between 9.5, 9.1 and may be 10.1.

Hi bluescorp,

I have a Jamo sub200 with me. Although I had decided not to go with the sub initially, I had to go for one as I had made advance payment to the Jamo guy for the speakers. However I later decided on the wharfe 9.5 and got the sub from Jamo.

Although the 9.5 can go down to 30 Hz, experts say that a dedicated sub-woofer will do the job well with lower frequencies. However, it may not be absolutely essential to have a sub-woofer to start with and this can be added later I guess.

Hii Sri,

thx! thats great!

Hoiw about the mid and highs of 9.5 are they clear as compared to 9.1 or 10.1. I mean 9.5 + a sub will that be too boomy? Voice and the high shouldbe clear for indian music.

If you plan to add the sub go with 9.1 or 10.1s.

I had not auditioned the 9.1/10.1 as I wanted to go only for floorstanders :). I felt the 9.5 + sub is quite okay - not boomy (probably because of the Jamo sub I have). But its best you audition the combo.
I have used the 9.DFS only for movies - I play music only on the 9.5 (Direct mode) or 9.5 + sub..

I have a question, does the power of the Avr have an impact on the power of the subwoofer(powered sub) say would a 1911 have a edge with compared to 1611?

I have the same combo and I fully agree with you on 1611 + 9.1 :ohyeah: (what! biased me? :D)

IMO sound was very feeble to start with.. but was getting better when tuned in audyssey.. i don have a sub .. so i left the speakers as large.. still the bass is boomy.. My Ht guy says ur the 1st to tell wharfs' bass is very boomy.. i am tryin out different settings on my amp to fine tune my sound quality
