Hi Everyone, I have been using RVX 663 with MSA 6 speakers for quite some time . and my sound source is my laptop. It has a HDMI 1080i interface ,Untill I purchased a Sony BDP 490. there is a huge diffference in the sound quality between the BDP and laptop source. I am very satisfied with the sound quality from the laptop, but the sound form the BDP is not at all impressive , infact it made me demotivated. is this by design ? or anything I am missing ?

Are you talking about like to like material ? are they connected in the same way?

Have you set it to Bitstream?Or LPCM?If the two outputs are different, there can be a bit quality change.

I have put it bitstream. the source for BDP is via USB , and the same data is locally stored in lappy. one thing I observed is that whileplaying music even the sub is not active.

Use direct mode in the surround options of the AVR and compare again.

There is a button on the remote to select Direct mode.

Well processing by the player in the PC can make a difference, although my perception would it should not be that big, but you only know when you try. most likely it is that. Which player are you using?

here is what I have observed :

I did test my receiver using the mic for default YAPO. I only have L+R+SWFR.

1) if I am using my laptop as the source, in the reciever it is showing only L+R+SWFR when playing anything
2) if I am using the BDP player as the source, int he reciever it it showing everything L+R+SL+SR+C+LFE.

very confused

Are u using windws media plyr? If yes, is graphic equalizer enabled? If yes. That explains why sound is better w/ laptop.

this sounds like some pre processing is being done

quick check.....does modifying volume control in the player affect volume??
if yes, pc is decoding it. you shd try to bit stream it instead
