I have always wondered what is there in a BS that costs > 50K. I understand they are all reference series (or) close to that & should have mind blowing performance...Almost all of the top of the range BS speakers are made of wood + good components...But 50 K + is just too much money for a BS atleast in my opinion...

Take for instance Sonodyne Studio Monitor SM 100Ak Reference studio monitors (Active speakers). Hard core studio speakers, made of fully aluminium + same good components aval on earth.. They cost only 65K with in built amplifier. Almost the same performance of the reputed brands Top BS speaker models...

Even if Sonodyne made the SM100Ak passive speakers, i believe it would not cost more than 50K.

Now where is the cost of aluminium & cost of wood ? Where is it that we are paying more ? is it for the performance of the product (or) for the import duties + shipping charges + other over head costs ?

R & D and efforts in testing and optimizing the product will be the main cost in addition to the factors that you have already quoted + brand value +profit margin.

When it comes to india the main price hikes are due to the import tax and hifi gear still kept in the luxury segment and sale doesnt happen in huge quantities here so dealers have to price it accordingly and thats the reason why we guys benefit from group buys:-) not just speakers but applies to everything thats owned by videsi's :-P
@elango-bhai i appreciate your love for desi stuff and in particular the sonodyne's!but sometimes(seriously no offence meant)you seem to going over the top and its almost become like any new speaker thread we all know/expect that you are going to be there promoting the sd's!...seriously havent even seen 'praveen' talk this much about them :-P .once again bhai no offence intended!

Hah hah ha...Thanx metalmickey.... I like constructive criticism... No no.. I am not @ all offended....

I don't work for Sonodyne:), May be i will if i was offered. I do like other brand stuff.. I own wharfedale diamond 9.2's & Marantz receiver.. When i didn't know how to start my hifi, this forum helped & guided me to whole new stuff in the world...

I have been reading threads after threads & many posts here in the forum, reading reviews abt speakers & amplifiers, i am thinking are we paying more than what we should actually....

For Ex, Diamond 9.2 which i bought for 15K in Jan 2011 are now replaced with 10.2. May be some improved components.. But the price is 25K now.

I do recommend Sonodyne products to fellow members who are on a very tight budget but want the best VFM product... It they are specific to any brand & price, i keep off myself...

If atleast one of these brands (PSB, Paradigm, Monitor Audio, KEF, wharfedale, Polk) manufacture in India, my recommendations are always going to be for them too in addition to Sonodyne...:ohyeah:

True.. Agree to your point regarding the R & D, testing....

My point is if a BS speaker is selling for $1,000 or more in a developed country, when brought to the developing nations like us cost almost a NUCLEAR bomb.....

I think it must be because when the distributors import here, they fix the base price as $1,000 for the product + other over head cost which roughly makes it $1,500 in India.

Why can't they reduce the base price when importing to developing nation & price it close to the $1,000 in India ? Is it a tough ask ?

Actually some brands do that... my exposure for example costs 2300$ in US and I got mine for around 1L when dollar was 50. Do the math and that's less than the dollar price. As per the distributor abhishek who is a great guy, this is possible because exposure doesn't believe in advertising which is a major cost and that benefit is passed on to customers. What you get for your money is pure quality and research into a product.

Glad to hear there are atleast few brands who do this & i should say you are lucky to get the exposure close to the US price....

Which are the brands who have priced their products close to their international price ?

Have you factored in what profits the retailer and importers want?
How do you know that they don't plan to buy a new S class Merc (from the profits earned).

@elango-am happy you took my comments in the right spirit and nice thread here! I basically felt the wharfs were initialy priced on par with its uk price but that was back then in 2010!

Exactly the same point...:) I wouldn't say that they will but a S class Merc out of the profit earned. But they try to earn a hefty sum...

In addition to the actual cost of the product + duties, we almost pay more or less the same amount to the importer & retailer in the form of over head costs...

You are more than welcome metalmickey....

Yup.. As you said Wharfedale & Mission series of speakers were priced genuinely even until Jan 2011 (when i bought them). But then after that
