I personally Feel, its Generation Gap Rather than Quality of Music. Music is evolving dont ask me whether on Quality, I dont have answer.

Somehow I cant listen any Rap Song, For me it sounds like Boring, When Comes to Pop, Only few comes to my mind after 2000 (Though am not serious Pop fan).

All the New Generations Kids\Youth Loving and giving more time than we did in our Age and they start liking what ever they listen.

Also Personally I feel the Music should move into Fusion as almost best Music already produced, which gonna impress Us.

Instead of getting into debate on the quality of Music, We could stick to our fav list and enjoy Music, thats the purpose and we cant win any hearts with debate.

This is my opinion and If some disagree I respect, as this is Nature

I would pick Beyonce anyday hyeah:

50's Sinatra stuff is over, 60's revolution/pyschedelia is over, 70's hard rock is over, 80's electronica is over, 90's grunge/hip-rock is over. 2000's - crappy formulaic pop raises its ugly head!

But then again, is it? There is always something for everyone in the music universe, so why not!

Now a Senior Citizen, my father used to get mad when I played Beatles 'Revolver', being brought on mainly british music - Cat Stevens, R.Stones, Cream etc for me those were the golden days of music, can't relate to all of todays music, I'm sure my children will tell their children about the good music they listened to 'In Their Days'.

This is not true at all. The only reason we feel the "best" music is because it was the one we grew up listening to, so we have a huge bias and emotional attachment to it. So we look back at our history with rose tinted glasses, cherry pick only the best from your past, and compare it with the worst of the present.

If we make an effort to look at the entire spectrum of pop music bands and albums today, and compare it with the full spectrum of pop music from our era, we will find they are both a mixed bag of juvenile music catering to pre-teens and formula pop music, combined with super-talented indie musicians pushing the boundaries and finally "getting discovered", combined with talented megastars.

Every single generation has this mix.

Check out these Anderson .Paak live songs for example. Or this Gnarles Barkey song. Or this song. Or Mumford and Sons. Like this song Or this one. Or Alt-J. Check out this live acoustic performance. Or you should hear Sia. Such as this song. Or this one. Maybe these are just songs I personally like and you might not like them at all. Just saying that there are a ton of extremely talented bands and artists - if anything more today than ever.

I dont think that its more terrible than what it was yesterday or before that. Its just that everything is more accessible now. everyone is listning to music now, I am probable one of the younger people here and even i remember growing up back in the 90's only a handful of people who really really loved music owned music players and speakers. we pesonally did not even have a radio at home. then came the time of cheap phones and FM radiao and suddenly music was accessible to the masses. They did not care about quality of music. They did not want to break down a piece that someone created over the period of months and listen to it again and again to understand the complexity. All they needed was a quick fix - a tone hook and a beat. So the popularity of such music became higher than ever and thats why we feel that mordern pop is worse than ever.

Music, or any other entertainment form evolves based on the need of the time, and what comes to the market is what the mass needs. Understand that once, entertainment in India meant Karnatic/Hindustani music for the mass which has evolved to Arijit and Honey Singhs now. Similarly popular music migrate from rock and rolls, hip hops, pop, rock, rap to reggaeton or whatever they call it now
Have an open mind to enjoy 'music of the times' and definitely you will be able to move from Richard Marx to Ed Sheeran easily

if you look outside the commercial pop world, there is still good music being produced out there

I listen predominantly like old music ( Jim Reeves, The platters, Nat king cole etc), but I do listen to new music too, mostly vocal trance. Over the past 10 years, there have been some very nice EDM being produced - Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Omnia - these guys do not have the constraints of modern pop, have relatively low costs of production (mostly only their own effort in production) and have the luxury of making pieces of music which can take their time to unravel due to the nature of the format & target audience, plenty of competition among upcoming DJ's, and a strong crowdsourced curation and discovery ecosystem, which leads to some pretty good stuff.

I would not comment on quality of music. What I would point out is the tough conditions for a musician or group that exist today. Plus there is a lot OG hood music being produced. For eg I likecled zep it I also like Jack white. My two paisa. Oops just realized I was supposed to comment on pop.

Like many people are saying .. it is generation gap and also I think people are not listening keenly as there are several other modes of entertainment, which might be distracting to the listeners.

In the good old days, we had only MTV or Chitrahaar to listen to the latest music and decide to buy the album if we liked any song. When we bought the cassette the feeling of investment was there and we proudly showed the cassette collection. It was a emotional investment in my opinion. Now most of the songs are downloaded for free or streamed for free on Youtube. If you haven't paid for the music, then I think the feeling is somewhat thin!

Among the modern lot, Sia sounded quite good to me

Interestingly enough, nowadays, most bands make their real money from live shows and from selling their branded stuff like t-shirts, caps, hoodies etc. But yes, you are right, they make little money from Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube etc where most people tend to listen to music nowadays. However, live shows are now big business and the same fans who download music illegally or nickle and dime for free radio channels also readily pay $100 for a ticket or $20 for a t-shirt.

Very true.
Though it sounds illogical but possession of a physical medium like cassette /Vinyl... admiring the album cover etc, was part of the whole musical experience.

When you download music the feeling of pride of possession is totally missing.

In my opinion there was no music in the past. In the 50s there was some guy talking into a mike with another sitting on a stool playing a harmonica. That was their idea of music and singing. Some liked it some didnt. Its a personal choice.

95% of forum members here today download cheap free illegal music porn and movies. So lets not point fingers. This includes me.

Todays music is different. Better or worse is a matter of personal choice,opinion and taste. This is 2017. Times have changed. No point holding onto a cigar looking far away and thinking, aaahhhhh in the good old days . There is no good old days. There is now. Times change and so does music just like the other 1000 things around us. I might not know all the songs and artists of 2017 like my 4 yr old daughter, but I have no problems with todays pop culture. My daughter closes here ears when I listen to Neil diamond at home on Vinyl. She tells me daddy please stop this noise.
