My friend is renovating his house. Guys can you suggest what all wire's to put so it does not become a hassle afterwards. For starters he plans to have 1 pair of cat6 wire at every point.

Regards
Sid.

Your friend should consult with a professional. For starters, if he wants to transport video across the whole, more cat 5/cat 6 cabling would be required.

The best way to do this is to list his requirements and then see what is to be done. Unless his requirements are specified, all suggestions are useless.

Cheers

Agree with Venkat. Important to know why your friend wants a wired network across in the first place.

Based on requirements one can decide to use a mix of wired and wireless points. Use CAT6 to be future compliant. Let me share what I have done if that helps give your friend an idea.

My requirement was to be able to have a wireless & wired network across the home for Audio-Video and browsing applications. Wireless for light weight usages like browsing and Wired where bandwidth was key For Eg:Video applications. The network had to be scalable to support an automated home which includes home security system and DLNA(Digital Living Network Appliance) in the near future.

So, recently when my electrician had half a box if CAT6 cables at a great price, I umped on it and went ahead with a DIY wiring of my house. My house was constructed 15 yrs ago and hence no special conduits were laid for Network cables. But luckily, we had conduits for cable TV. So I replaced all the TV cables(which were anyways not being used after Tata Sky) with CAT6 cables such that one end of the Network cable from all rooms would terminate at a single place where I have my network hub. In my case this is my car garage where I have my BSNL ADSL modem cum router. This device also triples as a 4 port hub and wireless 'G' router. One of the outputs of this hub feeds internet into my Linksys WRT610N which is used in my Entertainment Room primarily because of its high bandwidth and dual band 'N' wireless capability. This router again has 4 ports used to connect my PS3, PopCorn Hour(for streaming HD videos) and NAS(now sold, need to build my own). My Laptop and Squeezebox are connected wirelessly to this router for streaming music.

I do not have a wired connection in the living areas as I do not have devices that would require a high speed wired line. Also most of usage of computer at home is for browsing and we have two Smart Phones which we use extensively for browsing while at home. For such activities, even wireless 'G' speeds suffice. So, I have placed the two routers such that they cover the entire house wirelessly. I will be adding an Apple Airport Express(that I bought off a fellow HFV member yesterday) to enhance the wireless network in a part of the living room where I get slightly lower wireless signal and possible usage of Apple AirTunes to stream music to a Music System close by.

Sorry for the rather long post. Hope this helped:).
