xbox connection just a HDMI or do i need to connect Optical cable ??

just got my 1st AVR , Yamaha 571 i just want to know do i need to connect just the HDMI From xbox to AVR , so that i can get 5.1ch audio or do i need to connect optical from xbox-avr along with HDMI cable ? bce in xbox as u know in sound setting 5.1 is only via optical is it true ??
