Hi,
I had purchased Yamaha home theatre Yht 2910 with sattelite speakers and they were quite good but I somehow like tower speakers more then sattelite speakers.I prefer music. I came across a sale of used around 15 years old kenwood sf700 tower speakers with a center speaker and 2 rear bookshelf speakers with the same impedance and watt required with my Yamaha avr.Asking $250 .
I liked it's warm sound which I prefer rather then the sattelite speakers which I own currently (little on the brighter side). I'm not sure whether I should call my sattelite speakers bright or crisp, clear sound.
I just want to know is kenwood a good brand to rely upon?I am no audiophile and neither do I know much about music systems. On comparing both I found kenwood more neutral and vocals though clear and crisp but not as crisp as Yamaha sattelites.I though can listen to kenwood tower speakers for hours since they are so neutral and on the other hand could never listen to my Yamaha sattelite speakers for more then 3-4 songs. Would feel like stressed.
Shall I buy Kenwood sf700 5.0.Does kenwood make really good speakers???
I know I have no idea on music system and may sound a layman. Excuse me for this.
ps:- can't afford new tower speakers.
Ur reply will be a great help to me. Thanks in advance

Only 2 things to consider.

1. Can receiver on paper handle the speaker. Mainly the impedance.
2. Do you like how they sound.

If these two considerations are satisfied, go for it.

If it is possible to carry your amp to the speaker sellers place, it will be great to hook up and check.....if it works well then you have a good deal. Check every speaker at good volume levels to ensure that the cone drivers are not damaged and are working fine....audition with music you are familiar with....most imp..bargain....better to do a face to face deal....

Sony and Kenwood including Akai used to make real good stuff in the 80s and 90s....so I assume these would be ideal. They will definitely sound much much better than your satellites as the sound is being now properly divided through appropriate drivers...

I had carried my Yamaha htr 3067 amplifier to the dealers place, hooked up to kenwood speakers and it sounded fantastic at all levels. Impedance and power matched with my receiver perfectly. All drivers sounded perfect. Very balanced sound.ILiked it alot.
I was just wondering even though I liked it alot, can I rely upon kenwood speakers 2003 model tower speakers which is quite old since technology is advanced now?
Can 2003 speakers can play as good as latest tower speakers made by well-known brands like pioneer, klipch and others?

No idea of how good they sound. But speaker tech has not changed drastically over the decades.
If you are getting a pair of towers, center and surrounds and they work well with your AVR consider it.
You have heard them out, so you are the best judge.
Check for physical damage and check if the rubber is flexible enough.
If it is brittle, it means they have been unused for a while.
Good luck!!
Cheers,
Raghu

If they sound good to your ears, they are worth it. Just check each speakers individually that they sound the same without any distortion. Normally when you play all the speakers, some flaws in any one of the speakers may not be audible. Tweeters are very prone to damage and they can also damage your AVR if defective.

How to check each speakers individually? Shall I unwire them from my amplifier and play each speakers individually?wont this harm the system in anyway?

Speakers quality hasn't changed a lot. The older ones are better compared to the new ones for the price. For the same sound quality you have to pay substantially higher.

This is good for me because I bought these pair of Tower Speakers, center speaker and surround for $250 (Rs. 18000).Checked out Sony home theatre system and found very bright.I somehow don't like bright /very crisp /very clear audio. Kenwood was more of my liking.
Thanks .

The built quality of speakers in the 90s and 2000s were good...thats why most sell systems as Vintage audio and some do buy such systems,

The drivers used then were designed to handle most frequencies so you will not face any challenge..some of these speakers even lack a crossover..if you feel bass lows lacking (especially from movies), just add a small powered sub which can handle the lower frequencies which the towers are lacking (if any).

As long as its good for your ears and the AVR can handle it well...why not....

For example, I am using Bose 301 series III Bookshelf speakers which are almost 20 years old. Never repaired etc...can handle music very well and dont see any struggle for movies at all....

Most of the latest speakers are computer designed and have specific crossovers in them to emit the tonal qualities you hear today.....expensive...

In the 80's Kenwood & Pioneer among other brands were fierce competitors with both making good stuff. I still have a Kenwood amp which looks & feels more solid than my current Marantz receiver. Kenwood was famous for overall music systems like Pioneer but were never specialised in making speakers though they had a separate line of amplifiers. If yours ears like the sound then you can go for it provided the condition of the speakers/drivers are fine & you have the space for them.
As the other FM's have suggested pls check the speaker impedance & whether the Yamaha can drive them at listening volumes .
