I searched the forum (here as well as outside) for a comparison among the 3 AVRs above. But I didnt find any(?). All are priced in similar range (45-50k), has similar features and applications. My plan is to pair this with Andrew Jones 5.0 + SVS SB1000 for a mix of movies and music.

Pouring over many individual reviews, I see that Yamaha is consistently rated high among the three, Sony seem to have minor problems but still stay neck to neck, while Pioneer seem to lack the punch in comparison to the others.

I want the receiver to be dynamic for movies, but play FLAC/ WAV and have a good DAC as well. Pioneer 924 seem to have the same Sabre 32b DAC as LX series which is why it came into my buying list (and also that I am sold on Pioneer speakers). Other players considered: Denon and Marantz. I have a Denon now and I like the tonality. Heard a lot about Marantz, but also that they are more musically oriented. I was OK with either of them, but for lesser price the above trio seem to offer more.

So question: has anyone done this three way (or five way, if you'd included equivalent Denon and Marantz) comparison? My budget is ~50k.

Dealers says in Mumbai,Pioneer has service related issues and hard to get demo.Pioneer 924 uses ESS DAC chip and Yamaha Burr brown. Both Yamaha and Pioneers are good in movies.Just need to listen before buying.

Hi determinus...

I have SONY STR DN1050 receiver running with polk tsx110 bookshelf speakers. The performance is overall good. I wondered with the sound which is from the 2.0 bookshelf speakers while watching movies.

You can try STR DN1060 latest one too. This is availabe for the same cost.

I am using Pioneer 924 receiver from past few months paired with Tannoy mercury v4 5.1 setup. I also have denon x1000 with me. My observations are
For movies...
1. MCACC room correction is better than audyssey
2. Bass out put is better with Pioneer-not boomy but tight plenty of bass
3. Mobile application - icontroll-is one of best i have used so par
For Music pioneer DAC is definitely better sounding
I went with pioneer because following advantages
1. 2 HDMI out put-1 for projector & 1 for monitor which i use during music listening, no need to switch on projector always
2. I needed 2.1 pre outs to connect emotiva stereo power amp

Overall I am happy with pioneer 924.

Went with 924 finally (with Andrew Jones). Thank you all for your comments.

Decided to use my 1993 old school Yamaha V870 (85x2) for stereo, with a good DAC. Now I will be hunting the DAC threads here. Overwhelmed by the amount of information here.
