A 110v surge protector instead of isolation transformers ?

You cannot change the frequency from 50hz to 60hz, at least not easily with these after market transformers. Do not worry about it though.

As venkarcr said, most devices can handle +10v or -10v easily. Maybe even a little more.

120v avr should work fine with 110V ac,if your area is prone to low voltages,you can add a stabiliser or ups at the input of stepdown. All AV devices convert the ac input to DC for the operational supply , so frequency is not a big issue.Many people use US born AVR' with stepdown trannies here in this forum. So i wouldnt worry about that too much.

A stepdown transformer cannot change the frequency. You will need a ac-ac converter to do that. If an online ups has a provision to output 60hz with 50hz input then it would work, I am not aware of such models

Second question : If the auto transformer secondary becomes an open circuit, full 230V will be applied to the load .

Will a fuse, placed after the secondary output stage, rated to trip at any voltage over 130 volts provide the cost advantage of auto-transformers while providing protection such that the electronics equipment never experiences surges of more than 130 volts?

If required, we can have two or mores fuses after the 110 volts output of the secondary.

To think outside the auto-transformer box, Is it possible to place a set of fuses separately between the output of the auto-transformer and the electronic equipments? This can be in the form of a improvised in-between device between the auto-transformer output and the AVR. The fuse that will trip at voltages more than 130 volts can be inserted into a normal extension box without any surge protection.

Will this protect the AVR and the end-user?

A company (TorTech) that sells isolation step-down transformer is also promoting a "5 WAY USA PowerBoard with inbuilt surge protection" that "Can only be used with a Stepdown Transformer or 115V power source"
