My Onkyo gets so hot after a 2+ hour movie or so that if you touch the top of the amp (it has a large array of vents at top to help dissipate heat)... the heat is too much. If I touch the top it's so hot that it's almost at melting point.

I left 6" space above the Onkyo to help in heat dissipation and there's a 2/5" space on either sides.. still it's damn hot

How do you guys help cool your stuff? (with no A/C).. and I have seen in some friends's places too that we Indians sometimes stack components (put dvd player on top of another player etc.. of course if it's rented you don't have an option,, but still.. I have seen people who keep their top of their A/V receiver covered with a cloth...)

I know fans are an option.. and large fans and multiple fans = lower noise. Or can we buy some of those laptop coolers and use them?

Also can someone tell me in Hyderabad where can we find some of quality 120mm fans/. (ones with fancy lights on it are fine too)?

Hi
In true Indian style all a/v gear should be enclosed in plastic at all times!!! :)

Get a scythe s-flex or cm 120mm fan with Japanese fluid bearings. To induce airflow in a particular direction requires creating a "tunnel". The PC chassis fo example needs to be closed comletely to achieve a certain air velocity and cooling efficiency. It sounds contradictory but your CPU and graphics may run at slightly higher temp if lid is left open. In your AVR situation a fan that blows gently over the vents may be more useful in the absence of a tunnel. If you try to suck air out and away it may not be possible to generate wind current in the absence of a wind "tunnel".

I use a Onkyo TX-SR876 which gets much hotter. However, I have kept it on top of my TV table so that it gets full ventilation. See the picture:

The gold colored big box on the right side corner is my Onkyo AVR. Do note that I do not use any cooler fan - because my house is centrally air conditioned. However, the 876 still does get very hot but I have not been worried about it enough to buy a cooler fan. Onkyo AVRs are known for generating a lot of heat.

Even with 6 inch of clearance, the heat generated by Onkyo AVRs would have no where to go without appropriate exhaust / cooling fans. I would strongly recommend you to move the AVR out of enclosed space and keep it fully ventilated. That will help dissipate a lot of heat more easily than the enclosed shelf where the heat most likely will be trapped without an exhaust fan.

I used to use a small AC exhaust fan for direct cooling on TOP for my Onkyo, now kept AVR on little height & open ,so heat is spread.

even my yahama gets very hot.. u can touch the top after 2 hrs of use..
i have tried using a small 4" exhaust fan attached from my cupboard..it vents out some hot air, bit still the heat of AVR remains..
I also am thinking of heat dissipation ideas similar to cpu cooling..
also though of something like a small kitchen suction module, maybe worth a try..:ohyeah:

If one is having enough audio and video equipments that too expensive one's then an air condition is a must and if one has a dedicated room for such activities then nothing like it and in a miracle if you do not have windows then you can not ask for anything else for such a dynamic room. :yahoo:

When we buy the gears there is a cost, one should treat an air condition also as a part of av cost. This is all the more important in hotter cites but if you are lucky enough and living in Himachal Pradesh, forget about an air condition you can even over look a fan. :licklips:

Installing on any one side of the cabinet a 4 inch video fan as it is know should take care of the heat.

excellent idea..
just did a practical last night..
kept the 4" fan on the top of the AVR at the extreme far right with an angle so that the air spread can be maximum..
the temperatures after 2-3 hrs of usage were almost half of what they usually are..

thanks..

MY B&K 7270 Gets very hot. I can make tea over it. I have had this issue for almost 4 years. Keep it ventilated. That should be good. I tried to use a exhaust fan to pump out air from the compartment where it was placed. But later I have removed it it is working fine.

I always use a 220 Volt small AC Instrument Cooling fan (4 Inch or 5 Inch) available in any computer shop for within Rs 500/-.

Stick 4 Pencil Erasures at the 4 corners of the fan and put it at the top of the Amplifiers where the heat is generated. If the heat sink is located at the back of the Amp then place the fan standing at the back close to the heat sink.
You can try both ways by sucking or by throwing air at the point of heat generation.

Hope your problem will be solved.
