Arj and i were at Rajivs place on Saturday. Gosh Rajiv is a walking talking encyclopedia on all great sounding vintage stuff. There are lots of guys who can tell you a lot about vintage stuff but I have hardly come across anyone who has knowledge of whats great, whats good and whats not. And to top it this knowledge comes with what is easily serviceable and what is not.

The day i am going all vintage, Rajiv is going to be my best buddy.

Coming to the listening session, i was fairly impressed with the Lyrita 2A3 amp. I personally did not have a great experience listening to it at my place as well as at Jaibir. It was lacking in dynamics. At Rajivs place it was a lot more dynamic. I checked with Rajiv to check if his amp was a little different from the others. Rajiv said he uses a 16 ohm tap. Maybe that makes the difference. He even replaced the 2A3 with the 45s. Sound became a lot more linear. There was also more transparency. Immediacy and micro dynamics improved. But there was a loss in the magical mids as compared to the 2A3. Rajiv's endeavour is to get the best qualities of the 2 tubes in his system.

It was the first time i was hearing Altec speakers. Because of the room size, Rajiv was using directional horns to avoid room interference. This was a new learning for me. That is what horn diaphragms to use for what kind of room size. Needles to say the sound was immediate, coherent and life like. Someday i would like to listen to the Altecs in a larger room to see what dynamics it is capable of.

All in all Rajivs knowledge and warmth and not to forget his wifes hospitality made it an unforgettable afternoon.

Thanks Rajiv.

Hi Prem,

Thanks for writing about your experience with & @ Rajiv's place. I whole heartedly concur on all that you have said about him & his rig. May he continue to share his knowledge with all of us :clapping:

I sincerely hope that Rajiv sets up a Vintage Audio Museum ASAP!!! :licklips:

:)

I second the knowledge. Years back I learnt about the garrard from him and that helped me snag one when i ran into it, and he knows quite a bit about tubes too. will soon be benefitting from his mods to the lyrita phono too!

Thanks for sharing your experience Prem. I too visited Rajiv last year and I echo your thoughts on how he is an encyclopedia of vintage electronics, how good his system sounds and ofcourse the hospitality. About his system, I was very much impressed with the immediacy, intimate and uncompressed sound. The voices sounded so real and I especially liked how female voices on Rajiv's system. Decays were fantastic and there was no bass overhang at all. I remember how amazed I was when I first heard the Altecs at anilva's place. That 15 inch driver has almost no excursion.

Many days later, I was still unable to forget the sound that I heard at Rajiv's place and I decided that I too want to make a pair of Altec based Horn speakers. I want to hornload even the 15 inch driver (mostly Front Loaded Horn like Altec VOTT) as I plan to use the speakers in a fairly large space (27 x 12 including 12 feet behind the speakers and a ceiling height of about 15ft) . I am currently reading up on several designs and am meeting Rajiv next week to finalise the plan.

Yes Santhosh, Rajiv was telling me about your plans. So i now know where to listen to the Altecs in a large place.

+1 to Prem's posting. Though I have not gone to his house, we have met and interacted and he has come to my place too. Apart from being the 'guru' of vintage, he is also a great human. Always willing to help and walk that extra mile.

One of the best assets of HFV.

Cheers.

Luckily, I have been there too and I loved the time I spent listening to music there! For me, Rajivs music/audio room is one of the best places to be!

Hi,

Prem,Denom,Titus,George,Anil,Steven and Santosh thank you so much Im truly touched with your comments.

I consider myself privileged to have met and interacted with all of you .

Regards
Rajiv

Thanks for the great Post Prem.

Rajiv is a real high fidelity lover! Very different from the typical vintage purveyor who are more interested in the fondle factor of vintage knobs and handles.

He has tons of hands-on experience. I am sure the Altecs will amaze.

Good post Prem. Also good to have experienced and knowledgeable members like Rajiv in the forum. Kindly give info about music source (CD or Vinyl).
@ Santhoshbhai, all the best for DIY speakers.

:) Regards

Hi Hiten
