Acoustic Portrait held a product launch this Sunday and a few of us were invited to attend.
The product launch included the Swara M2rPi DAC and the MS 601 Speaker with the new Integrated Amplifier as the feature.
The setup was in a smaller room next to Siva's main listening room.
This was done to better approximate the average listening room.
Sources were the Thyaga CD Transport and DAC with a Win10 Computer Transport
Speakers were the new MTM configuration MS 601 floorstanders - beautiful to look at in the flesh.
The Integrated is a pretty beefy looking piece of gear with a 6N2P based preamp section coupled to a solid state power section. The amp is conservatively rated at 175W with an Alps motorized Volume Control on the front right. The Selector switch is via the remote which allows 5 inputs. An LED window completes the front face plate.
Overall listening impressions was that of a warm tube sound. A little laid back with a delicate touch - surprising considering that the amp has plenty of power to spare. Siva told me that he voiced this amp taking into consideration feedback received from other AP users. In comparison with the AP Reference amps these come off as a little polite and warm.
The setup had only a few hours in them so it would be interesting to see what the sound would be like with more time on the clock. The speakers as we heard them had about 20 hours on them with the amp having much less. Still this is a nice product which offers plenty of power to drive most speakers in a single chassis. No need to mix and match for suitable interconnects and power cords as one would need to with a Pre Power combo. Just connect your DAC and off we go with a single power cord and a pair of speaker cables.
The hospitality extended by Siva and Jeya was wonderful as always. Their place is beautifully done up in a warm earthen ethnic style that is easy on the eyes. I had a chance to meet with forum members arj and Aurobindo. After listening to a variety of music from Hindustani Classical and Western Classical it was time for us to leave.
It is great to see Acoustic Portrait back with three new products - each hitting a different audio profile. Siva is working on a few more things which are surely going to be worth looking forward to - a new Reference DAC being one. For those of us who have come to like the brand it is really nice to see that they are back and looking to make new waves. I for one - wish them the very best.
