Acoustic Portrait held a product launch this Sunday and a few of us were invited to attend.
The product launch included the Swara M2rPi DAC and the MS 601 Speaker with the new Integrated Amplifier as the feature.

The setup was in a smaller room next to Siva's main listening room.
This was done to better approximate the average listening room.

Sources were the Thyaga CD Transport and DAC with a Win10 Computer Transport
Speakers were the new MTM configuration MS 601 floorstanders - beautiful to look at in the flesh.

The Integrated is a pretty beefy looking piece of gear with a 6N2P based preamp section coupled to a solid state power section. The amp is conservatively rated at 175W with an Alps motorized Volume Control on the front right. The Selector switch is via the remote which allows 5 inputs. An LED window completes the front face plate.

Overall listening impressions was that of a warm tube sound. A little laid back with a delicate touch - surprising considering that the amp has plenty of power to spare. Siva told me that he voiced this amp taking into consideration feedback received from other AP users. In comparison with the AP Reference amps these come off as a little polite and warm.

The setup had only a few hours in them so it would be interesting to see what the sound would be like with more time on the clock. The speakers as we heard them had about 20 hours on them with the amp having much less. Still this is a nice product which offers plenty of power to drive most speakers in a single chassis. No need to mix and match for suitable interconnects and power cords as one would need to with a Pre Power combo. Just connect your DAC and off we go with a single power cord and a pair of speaker cables.

The hospitality extended by Siva and Jeya was wonderful as always. Their place is beautifully done up in a warm earthen ethnic style that is easy on the eyes. I had a chance to meet with forum members arj and Aurobindo. After listening to a variety of music from Hindustani Classical and Western Classical it was time for us to leave.

It is great to see Acoustic Portrait back with three new products - each hitting a different audio profile. Siva is working on a few more things which are surely going to be worth looking forward to - a new Reference DAC being one. For those of us who have come to like the brand it is really nice to see that they are back and looking to make new waves. I for one - wish them the very best.

Cannot have written it better. . Nikhil, was great to meet you
I will add my own points to the above- the speakers are simply drop dead gorgeous to look at and with a very small footprint and deep extension.

The Room is a square room hence the room boom was apparent butstill the speakers are really articulate across the spectrum.
The amp is also a beauty to look at and seems to have all the delicacy and microdynamics which is a forte of AP systems..the minor vocal inflections when listening to a male vocal was mesmerizing as always

Macrodynamics was very good. played a couple of western classical ( including ode to joy) and it has all the slam as needed along with the soft passages.

I am not a imaging person in terms of soundstage but the speakers through a wide soundstage depth was low because of the room constraint but you could make out the 3D stage

Vocals are lush..very lush like a tube. personal preference here as i prefer the rawness/harshness in sound but many folks prefer it differently so its a voicing thing ... Horses for courses

The DAC/Transport i have seen over the years and with even higher end Amps/speakers something i know well. hence what i wrote above is applicable to the the Amp and speaker .

I really loved it...and feel with the Swara source this int amp and Speaker gives a very good sound from a system at a price point of just an Amp or a speaker once would buy at that price. for someone who is looking at an Amp+Speaker or a overall system this is highly recommended.

if looking for individual components one of course needs to try out themselves to get the synergy as its very system dependent

Both arj and I were very positive on the Swara M2rPi DAC.
This is a DAC that really raises the bar on what can be obtained at this price.

The Streamer/DAC was setup with the AP Reference Pre and 845 SET monoblocks.
Speakers were the MS 601 floor standers. They sounded really good in the main room.

For Rs. 20,000 the DAC/Streamer is a very good buy considering Nikhil's and Arjun's feedback... Do you guys recommend this over the Schiit Bifrost as a DAC? The AP DAC is cheaper than the Bifrost and has a streamer option included as a bonus....

Thanks Nikhil, Arj for the thoughts on the new AP gear. The integrated amp does look very well built and beefy

Can you provide a little more information on the size of the room that the speakers were placed in and the speaker positioning with respect to the back and side walls? Do you reckon that these would work in a small room of around 12x12 ft?

Some indications on the price range for the speakers and amplifier will also be helpful.

Any idea what are the other products that Siva is planning to launch soon, other than the reference DAC?

Best,
apk

i think the room was around 14x14 or so...decently big but id do feel this can work in small rooms since it never flt overpowering. the room boom can be fixed by placement

I have not heard the Bifrost so cannot give you a comparison there.

As a side note: On a table on the side of the room, Siva had placed a few boards showing the design iterations he had taken to arrive at the current design release. The parts used are extremely high quality. Definitely no short cuts taken here including a proper built in Linear Power Supply.

Speakers would easily work in a 12 x 12 space.

Approx speaker price is Rs 1.3L
Amplifier approx Rs 1.2L

I would not like to mention any details on upcoming products from AP as things are fluid right now.
Siva is evaluating some options on the DAC as among other things the Pi DAC has raised the bar.

I am sure that the DAC should be good.

As per specs, this streamer has a RPI 3 in it.

From the specs, I found they have used "PCM5102A" DAC chip which is not very upmarket DAC ic these days. However, the other components they have used are of high quality like Panasonic FC (maybe) electrolytes, Wima box caps etc. I am sure they must have used a toroidal transformer in it. I believe this DAC uses I2S while sending data to the DAC board.

I couldn't find any secondary clock on this board iteslf, which means this DAC uses RPI's clock only. Correct me if I am wrong.
One more thing worries me that, there's no shielding between PSU section and analog section.

Looking at the price point it seems to be a good VFM package.

One more thing - this streamer could be a direct competitor of AUDIOPHONICS RaspDAC LTE HIFI Streamer Raspberry Pi 2.0 & DAC Sabre V3 - Audiophonics

Thanks Nikhil for this.

Not cheap, these - but am sure that the price-to-performance ratio is very high. Though at these prices (approx 2.5 L for speaker+amplifier), there are many worthy competitors. There is news of Rethm coming out with an entry level speaker priced in the same range as the AP speakers - around 1.25L.

At around 20K, the DAC seems to fall in the high VFM category!

Will plan to have a listen if I travel to Bangalore anytime soon.

Thanks again,
apk.

Then it is a fantastic product at it's price and it makes me think that the margins in high end DACs are quite high.... Siva has got a very good product out there...Congratulations to him.

Rs 1.2L for a 175W Integrated is about what you can expect.
The 175W rating is pretty conservative. It is a beast of an amp.
Paired with the tube pre stage - it offers power with a delicate touch.

Good to hear about the Rethms - more choices for audiophiles!
Just be careful to check though as Rethms are typically high sensitive speakers.
You will need to have an amp that is very quick - think First Watt or SET.

Does this mean that Siva has two integrated amps? There's one that has been mentioned at around 40k.

I don't think that's the right assumption.
Personally I think Siva has under priced the product.
If I deduct the price of rpi+toroid+rca connectors+cabinet+regulated psu, the price of the dac board would be something around 13k.

Now I cannot justify 13k (close to $200) price tag for a PCM5102 dac (thought it's without a reclocker).

I think this is the kind of misconception that AP has to deal with a lot.
The AP Swara Pi DAC is far superior to any DIY kit build.

I do hope this is not going OT.

Looking at it as two price bands. Siva has a source/DAC and an amp in the lower band and an amp and speakers in the higher band.
Does he have plans or even thoughts to have comple chains in both bands like he had with his reference range?

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
