Check if it reflects light. If yes, don’t go for it. It might not absorb sound too well

polyester is kind of synthetic material which absorbs less compared to regular rug. As far reflection, just point your mobile camera and check if it shines.

Black is fine. Brown is fine too as it doesn’t reflect light much and in a dark room you are unlikely to notice it. Don’t go for light colors.
