Keep aside how it sounds etc etc.
Just focus on the off axis response of such a design. ( MTM configuration placed horizontally)

Hope this helps many in choosing the right centre channel speaker.

But isn't this a case of the speaker not working as expected as per its design? :D
The horizontal directivity is quite narrow in a sensitive region when the speaker is used as inteded, laid with the longer side in the surface. Instead, due to its good vertical directivity, it needs to be laid with shorter side on surface as like a typical MTM for stereo. In this cade the good directivity control is expected due to the elliptica waveguide loaded tweeter and the twin woofers on either side. If it had more bass, it could have been used foe proper stereo listening, it seems like..

A center channel horizontally placed is only for convenience, not at all for quality sound. Depending on the cutoff an mtm design will have strong lobing esp when it's placed horizontally. A 2 way is not at all recommended because of this and combfiltering. High and mid range frequency sources should be placed vertically to have wide dispersion else due to lobing we get a very narrow sweetspot.

A center channel horizontally placed should have atleast 2.5 xover to avoid combfiltering or the best is a 3 way with mid and tweeter placed vertically to get wide dispersion. If possible the best way is to have same speaker as LR and use vertically. Another option is to use a wide range driver to cross low enough so that the mid and high freqs are covered and MM are only for very low freqs.

I guess a format like this ( Modula Neo CC)would work for a good 3 way center channel design:
or a coaxial mid+woofers design, probably when implemented well.
However, even the KEF R series mid here: https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/loudspeakers/kef_r2c/ seems to have slightly narrower directivity due to the choices made in the design.

Very Low sensitivity ..
R series is a lifestyle product.
